View Full Version : Time for a Turbo Refurb

I've been getting smoke from the exhaust lately, and losing oil and lots of it in the intake pipes. So over the last few months I've been getting the stuff together to do the job, and been waiting for the right weather!

So tonight I decided to go for it.

Eventually I got the turbo off after two hours of fiddling, and I have been porting a spare exhaust manifold, so that came off the car too, only to find that all the manifold bolts were loose, and one has completely disappeared!

Then I check the turbo over, found the play in the shaft was very bad, good job I'm rebuilding it!

CBV is full of oil, have got to clean the diaphragm off and check for tears.

Anyhoo, here's some pics of the dismantled turbo....sorry for crap quality, was using a crappy phone camera

Back of the compressor wheel coated in sludgy oil (seals are gone then) and the CHRA coated in thick sludge

Compressor wheel front covered in dried oil

Lots of bits. Note the turbine seals are all carboned up and coated in sludge

I have also had a go at porting the turbine housing a bit to accept the ported manifold. Will post better pics tomorrow.

Hi Bomb

Did you take more pics! I wouldn't have the first idea about porting but am considering giving my turbo a refurb before i fit the new exhaust and turbo hoses (beginning to smoke too and has done 165K). I was told smoking could be from fire check getting clogged but to chnge it the manifold would have to come off. Oils not smoking out of cap or dip stick tho so no sign its being overworked - if fire check was restricting.
Any tips on where to start with turbo overhaul much appreciated. Am searching for guides at the mo, as break overhaul is about the best I've managed so far. My attitude though..you can achieve anything with enough time and patience..I hope

do these turbos not need to be balanced once all new parts are fitted

They should be really but if you are just changing bearings and seals and the parts are in good order and the compressor wheel is refitted in the same place on the turbine shaft upon rebuilding it should be okay. Be it on your head should more problems appear though if it is assembled wrong.

It really is simple as long as you're careful. The guides on that link in the other thread tel you how to position the wheels for re-assembly in the same place.

Nico, see my other thread here pics are further down the page

I see that seaside holidays and summer breaks are on offer from only £99 - bargain!

Good luck with your turbo rebuild mate. :)
