At roughly what mileage on the S40 would I require to be thinking about replacing the clutch and gearbox? Considering this when chosing a suitable S40 to put the new engine into.

Cheers.

Clutches normally last 80,000 plus depending on mods etc and a gear box it all depends on how you drive im more of a t5 man but the gear boxes are very good and last a long time

Once had a Merc 312 as a daily drive and never needed a clutch in the 400,000 miles that I had it for. Depends greatly on how it's driven throughout it's life. Not an exact science as they are all treated differently. I also was foolish enough to buy a Morris Ital with 18k that was on it's 3rd one and it was done. Was a young car and got for £90 so no loss as sold it for a tidy sum more. If it needs it then where is the choice? Just like brake pads bud........

T4FLY, if you are worried just plan on any second hand car needing a clutch and timing belt, if you replace them at least its less to worry about, my v40 needed a clutch at 115k, but the box was fine! I changed the timinng belt asap, even though it had full stealer service records.

My T4 has covered 150k and is still on the original clutch. It's had a fairly hard life and still gets ragged daily!

My T5 has its original gearbox and clutch, albeit an uprated clutch; both still wonderful at 174,000.

I've just had my clutch done, first clutch (yes I have FULL history), at 199,000 miles...

The clutches do seem to be long lasting in the T4's and T5's. Although, the last clutch in my T5 lasted less than 10k, but I am now running 375lb/ft!
