Got the perforated box on. Sounds good now but not sure if it has the power it had before. Dash guage still off the scale. Thoughts anyone?

Help me out guys.....better to put old one back?

callyuk
Saturday 16th May 2009, 21:57
i would and see if you can feel a difference or try it from cold and see if it feel better then when theres no heat in the engine bay

If you're asking if there is a likelihood of the drilled airbox adversely affecting the cars performance then yes there is every possibility that it has - I thought that was talked about in your last airbox thread?

Only you can decide whether you can feel a difference in performance and whether its something you want to keep or not.

My q is a simple one....If the boost guage is still up can the performance still be down?

callyuk
Saturday 16th May 2009, 22:12
yes it can the airtemp can affect it hotter air means its less dense so you cant get as much in

AlanG

Hmmmmm!! Just back from a wee run. Now this is strange. Before I changed the box,I was getting a slight miss on big throttle/high gear, was blaming bcs. Gone now. Guage a couple of mm off scale and very smooth, very powerful. Mbc as it was. Whatever the physics.......happy:banana:

so is that back to the standard airbox then

what we need is more drilled airbox threads.

And what we dont need is drilled airboxes :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
On a serious note i wouldnt use a drilled air box as its not going to make a slight bit of difference and just contain warm air as it is not sealed.
If your wanting the different sound i reccomend getting a proper open air filter or just fit a perfomace filter.
But if your happy with it thats all that matter.

Fair point with the warm air. On the move it's a mute point..Obviously when in motion there is nothing but cool air and more of that is now flowing throught the airbox. The standard setup is constrictive.

Drilled air box won't fix misses.....it just won't sadly.

Not strictly true there sadly....when on the move, yes you get colder air etc, but you also get increased engine bay temps due to the engine working harder, turbo working, general movement in the bay from belts, pulleys etc.
Standard setup also isn't really that constrictive....more than 300hp can still be had with a paper filter on and no drilled airbox.
Heatsoak is the killer sadly when it comes to power....drilled airbox just makes holes in a sealed unit and allows heat to get directly into the system.

Never said otherwise.

Sounds good now but not sure if it has the power it had before.

Right there, you suggested it might not be :P

As long as you are happy with it that's all that matters :D

what do you mean by forced induction?

for the 1/4mile i did have a straight stainless pipe from the MAF sensor to the grill (about where the standard airbox collects the air) with no filter at all. Because this was nice & free flowing it boosted higher & hit the boost limit, did i just imply standard air box is restrictive :saythat:

the original set-up was almost identicle to this, altho the MAF sensor would of been where the blue elbow is now

Yep pretty much that, but with a MAF and filter in place somewhere along the line. Just wondered if anyone had gone down that path.....Not that I will.....Standard with pipercross works for me.

did start with a K&N 57i kit, but haven't got any pictures of that. Then went to a Pipercross cone which soon got replaced with the Viper so haven't got any pics of that either (it was only replaced because i got the Viper free, if it had been my money i would of stuck with the cone)

Pipercross Viper with sealed intake pipe & shortened MAF to turbo pipe. I had to get a solid pipe made after the flexi pipe collapsed & suffocated the engine lol

because things are always changing under the bonnet i couldn't be bothered to get a new pipe made & ran it open, not that it made a difference anyway

my drag racing set-up, altho it did get used on the road when i forgot to change it over after racing lol

the current set-up using a CCR racing filter & custom MAF

Is that a Tannoy under your bonnet? Do you shout at the public through it?

it was part on an ex-police siren, it had got the capabilities to work as a PA system but i never wired the mic up. I used the air horn function on it which was brilliant at scaring people because it was bloody loud & sounded exactly like an artic truck, did have a few occasions when the switch was in the wrong position & set the siren off instead lol

all that room u have there ,,, and there me trying force induction from a rwd t5 bug ,, but afer some ideas , i came up with a big side mount intercooler.electric side scoop and forced induction ,, which evern thow i made and did it , works , perfect lol

pulles air in very well and cools the incooler and engine with low engine temps too ,, after a 30mins drive ,, in plenty of boost , the intake pipes are still cold , not hot unlike some ive seen ,,
