As above. Changed oil and filter the other day and going by the book, bought 6 litres of 5W/30 semi-synthetic (supposedly 5.3 capacity). Had anticipated having some left for top-up if req'd. Wrong! Without draining the intercooler, the greedy bugger took nearly 7 litres. Luckily had some in another container. Not cheap!!:yikes:

7 litres unlucky you!! ... I always thought it was around 5.8 including the filter?? I know I never got more than that in mine when changing the oil... :)

That does sound excessive, by the way i would go buy another 5ltr because that is the wrong grade of oil for these cars and you will burn 5w30 like it is going out of fashion,

Yeah it should be 10w 40 semi synthetic, 5.3 litres without the filter, so just a wee tad more ;)

As a boy I was stupid enough to train as an LVM. Light vehicle mechanic. Please don't patronise me.

I bought 10ltrs to change mine and couldn't get more than 5.5 in....... 10/40 semi synthetic is cheaper too.

I put really thin, fully synthetic stuff in my first T5 and it was smoking like a chimney within a month.

ps, what is all this about speeding?

Hi Alan, The only way it will hold 7lts IMHO is if it has an additional oil cooler somewhere fitted,

That sounds like a lot of oil mine takes just over 5 litres of 10w 40 semi synthetic. I did run it on fully synthetic 5w50 but it went through that like it was petrol!!!

edit.

just looking again, although capacity is 5.8 litres if you completely drain the oil in the system the total capacity is actually 6.7 litres in total... take a look at this screen shot to see what i mean:

5w40 fully synthetic is where you should be, and change every 5k miles if you like a spirited drive/modified, 8-10k if you just plod around all day and dont labour the engine without full boost all the time/modified.

These motors have a hot little spinny thing on the end of them called a turbo. So use decent oil.

I've been told that changing from semi synthetic to fully, or vice-versa can cause gunk-in-the-engine type problems ...

AFAIC if it has one type or the other in it, stick to that...

And yeah 7 litres sounds like an additional oil cooler is in there...
