View Full Version : Intermittent boost problems

As some would have read, I bought a RICA 304 from HLM earlier in the year, and it was literally like a different car after fitting it.
My car has a 50k old engine, and has a full service history, so should be in fairly good condition.
The car is always warmed up and down before the turbo is used fully, and the engine never runs with any warning or fault lights.
It ran perfectly for the first month or so, when I had a strange "occurance" half way up to Lowestoft.
I was mid way through a tank of V Power, had been cruising at about 80 mph for about 45 minutes, we I pulled off onto the minor roads as I neared my destination. All dash readouts were normal, but i noticed the boost suddenly had reverted to reacting like the normal map, although the car still pulled smoothly, and it's MPG seemed normal on the trip computer. After a weekend worth of stop start, and open road driving, I checked all the hoses, and could find nothing wrong at all.
Resigning myself to having to go through each hose at a time, I drove the car without any fault lights/codes for a couple of days. (Did about 80 miles or so)
Then four days later, half way home, on the same tank of fuel (Just mention it in case it's relevant) the boost came back on board (up to the end of the white) and I've had a weeks happy driving.
Bugger me, if today, after an hours blat up to Colchester, when again, half way through a tank of Tesco 99, the bloody thing does it again!
Only just goes into the white on the boost gauge, still smooth, can't hear anything untoward, no faults etc, just the map has seemingly reverted to normal.
I've taken the ECU out, left it ten minutes, re-initialised the ECU, but to no avail.

Please don't read this as Anti-HLM, and I am also not inciting any "rant" or "I told you so" posts, but has anyone either experienced this?
I don't see it can be a hose, as it would nt be working one minute and then not the next surely?
I have emailed HLM, and will hopefuly get a steer, but I'm running out of the few ideas I had.....
Answers on a a postcard too............confused of Essex.

Does the car stutted on boost also your acuator could be failing or the boost controller

As Pete says, it could be the boost solenoid failing maybe. This would let boost through to actuator earlier than peak boost, and so open it, running lower boost. I think these actuators open at 3psi, so if the solenoid was totally nackered (open all the time) you'd only make 3psi!!

Either that, or there is a fault that is causing the ECU to go into limp mode (limit boost, retard ignition), but not sure if this would cause an engine check lamp, and also not sure if the Rica maps retain this feature.

Have you checked for codes?

Otherwise it could be worth trying another BCS.

If you mean stutter, then no, it goes on boost like a non tweaked car, just goes up, holds, but does nt increase the pressure after the initial build. (Hope thats clear)

I did wonder about the actuator, but I'm not totally familiar with the workings to make an informed guess.
Thanks Pete

Hallsy, thanks for clearing that up, we must have been typing at the same time.
I'll look into these areas, at least I undertsand it a little better now.
I'll try and locate some working BCS and actuator bits........I take it there's no way of testing mine is there?

If you have checked all the hoses and are possitive there is no leaks i would first buy a new bcs and see how it goes from there.
I bought a new v70 bcs from rufe and just before fitting it i decided to have one last look at the hoses and there was a leak on the vacume hose that leads to the compressor housing it had split just before it goes onto the nipple and wasnt obvious untill it was removed so ive got a brandnew boost controller.

I've not had it in bits Pete, but I'm not sure a hose could give this on or off type response could it. Its 100% fine for a good few hundred miles, then in one instant, it's off for a few hundred. What do you think?
And how much do boost controllers go for?!

My problem was a intermitent one and yes a hose can give this on and off response and hoses are flexable and can expand and rectract.
I would never buy a used bcs but they go for around £10 on ebay and the new one i got from rufe was about £43 posted

Bizarre car!
It reverted to "Mad Max" boost today, I'll try and get it into a local specialist for code checking and smoke test if required.
Thanks to everyone for their kind replies, and to HLM for coming back via the phone with some pointers.

Did you get to the bottom of this Rob? Just curious....

No mate, no signs of a re-emerging problem, even behaved itself across the RWYB at the weekend! I've marked the actuator to see if the next time it starts playing up it's stuck or obstructed.
If I do find anything, I'll post back on here.
Thanks
