850 need help lots of smoke

As above erattic running and a warning light on my neighbours 850 2.4t
neighbour says the warning light is lambda sensor.

any ideas?

The warning lamp is the Lambda light. Volvo speak for engine management and means the ecu has sensed a fault and stored the code which will need to be read to pinpoint it. As for the smoke.......What colour is it and is it constant? ie if it is blue and only shows on overrun it would suggest valve stem seals. if it is white and constant,that would suggest it's burning water (head gasket) and if blue and constant it's going to be either a blown turbo or even worse,piston rings.Req's some investigation but the erratic running is certainly connected to above. HTH.
