how hard would it be to turn a auto into a manual any ideas

It has been done before but it's not for the faint hearted....

its a friend of mine who wants to do this he can get a 850 t5 auto cheep and wants to swop the boxes on it he has garage and sum 1 to help him do this

am i right in thinking he can put a 6speed box off a focus st straight on???

Yeah you could but the ratios wouldn't be much cop, or so I've heard.

Yes, it can be done but there are some issues to be aware of.

It took me and my brother-in-law 4 days over the Easter weekend but I guess we were taking it quite easy as it was the first time we'd tried this! Plus, we had to pull 2 gearboxes, one from the donor car then the auto box.

You'll need access to an engine support beam and possibly a crane as the gearboxes are heavy (48KG manual, 65KG auto) and awkward to lift as you're doing it with outstretched arms.

For me is was quite simple, as my car is a late model ('97 model year) so already takes the speed signal from the ABS sensors. If yours is the earlier type with a speed sensor I think you either have to get a corresponding early manual box with a speed sensor, or modify your speed signal to come from your ABS. I'm not 100% about this bit - as I say mine was easier than this.

I will be doing a HowTo with photos and tips, I'll try and remember to post when I've done it.

1st & 2nd are identicle on both the M56 (T-5) & M66 (Crocus) & 6th on the M66 is the same as 5th on the M56, so basically its not worth swopping if you've already got a manual box
