Went for an MOT last week and the car passed with flying colours.

Tester said engine was in rude health (151k) only 5ppm on something or other...

Anyway the engine mangement light came on after doing the idle / fast idle tests.

I have a "homemade" LED code reader that I have used to successfully read and extinguish light once before.

I got a 1-2-3 this time (all ok) but I can't get the dash light out!!

OBD port - wire in 16 and 3 and then dipping 5 as per instructions - won't work??

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

think!!!! it should flash 1-1-1 for all clear think!!!! 1-2-3 may well be a fault code which is probably why the light wont go out the codes need to be cleared first i think!!!

1-2-3 ah not that one again - I have changed that bleedin temp sensor and thermo twice now.

Perhaps the car just got hot while stationary and flung up that code.

Do you think I should go to Volvo and get them to read the codes and do it properly?

well i would say that if you have read the codes then you have read them.
possibly as you say it got a bit hot while stationary? maybe thermostat is on it's way and causing it to hot up did you put in a new temp sender or an old one?
would'nt be surprised if you cleared the faults (it's fiddly with the homemade jobby but certainly can be done but the wont clear untill all codes have been read) and it did'nt come back but your call i'm afraid. all i know is most dealers charge telephone numbers for labour per hour. Good luck gareth

Is the cooling fan coming on when needed?

I will check that out.

If it doesn't then yes there is a problem.

Haven't had an overheating problem (touch wood) though.

Thanks.

Volvo kindly read the codes for free.

It was 1-2-3

All seemed fine they said - cleared the code and light out.

Monitor situation and perhaps replace thermostat first if caused more probs.

All ok for now.

How did you manage to get the codes done for free

I had a good bit of work done on the car with them some time back nearly 1.5 yrs ago.

Lots of niggly things and a head off for a bolt replacement (long story!)

I just ask nicely over the phone and when I am in take time to have a quick chat with them.

Without even asking they gave me my radio code too - thought it might be helpful to me - also free.

Then I call back the service manager and say thanks after the event.

Politeness goes a long way I think.

Cheers
