Hi all!

Doing my first DIY engine oil and filter change next week :D but don't know which oil to go for?

Read a load of great posts on here about how, where and what, but am a bit a stuck.

Posts from Rufe say SLX Longtec 0w-30 is Volvo's choice, as does the manual, but my local mainstealer used Magnatec 5w-<something> (not on the paperwork - 40 maybe?) when it was serviced there, but that's only semi-synthetic isn't it?

I'm happy to give it whatever's best to keep it happy, but is changing to Longtec a good idea? Would really appreciate some advice :)

Thanks,

Paul

If they used the 5w30 meeting the specification as shown below then it will be fine, though generally you would be better advised to go for the optimum protection option with the R model. This 5w30 is fully synthetic oil

ENGINE: Other Petrol Engines: S60R & V70R.
SERVICE INTERVAL: 12,000 Miles; 12,500 Miles
NOTE: ACEA A3/B3/B4 OR ACEA A5/B5
OPTIMUM Protection – Castrol SLX Professional Longtec for Volvo Cars 0w-30
STANDARD Protection – Castrol SLX Professional 5w-30

As long as they haven't done anything dodgy to my pride and joy, I'm happy ;)

Went for the Longtec in the end - better to be safe. Pads and filter arrived today so will be having a bash as soon as the oil turns up!

Thanks for your help Simon :)
