Hi guys, whilst driving my 850 tonight the yellow arrow on the dash started flashing and so did the green econ light on the mode selector for the auto box!
Bar from checking the oil level tomorrow when its light, thats the limit of my knowledge when it comes to auto transmissions
Any ideas? also it seems the box is slipping slightly in 1st, could that be limp home mode?
Best regards
John

i'm afraid flashing arrow is likely not good. doubt it's low fluid or anything that simple. first thing to do hopefully you have the diagnostics gizmo behind the drivers side headlight by the washer bottle filler, with this you need to get the codes read it's quite straight forward it's well documented in the haynes manual. as for the box slipping no i would be fairly certain it's in limp home mode the car puts it's in i think 3rd gear to try and stop any further damage with heavy accleration. if you have'nt got the diagnostics gizmo by the washer filler cap then you need to get the codes read by a dealer or someone with a good code reader. (i bloody hate autos) ;-/

The slipping in first is it being in limp home mode. Apart from checking the fluid level in the correct way, making sure it doesn't smell burnt and is a cherry red colour, the next thing is to get the codes read. Best of luck!

the slipping in 'first' isnt first, the car is starting to pull in 3rd gear. check the oil level, after that next suspect could be the PNP switch, anything after that could be a pain/expensive.

good idea PNP switch forgot about that little devil.
try moving the gear shift back and forth bout 10/15 times that might well do it. you will still have to clear fault codes mind.
did mine last year was £95 new from braydons fitted it myself, sorted.

Had exactly the same problem on my old T5 after it had been sitting for a few weeks. As 5seatert5x2 says, check the codes first,I reset mine and lo and behold that's all it needed,I hope that's all you have to do,Good luck.

Ok guys well thanks for your replies..... The weather has been crap today so didnt get a chance to have a look at it, how do you clear the stored codes then? can ya do via the diagnostic button my the headlamp? John

Would the easiest way to clear the codes not be to pull the ECU out over night ?

Always worked for me :B_thumb:

The Buttons thingy can take ages to get right, once it took me 1hr 40 mins to clear the codes, it was awful, stood in the rain and wind :(

Johnny5

Spose i could disconnect the battery overnight???? That would do the same as pulling the auto box ecu plug.......

cameron
Saturday 11th April 2009, 00:36
Yeah same as mate :B_thumb:

Should reset the ecu and turn out that annoying little triangle :(

I found this info on google..... do ya reckon its any good? although even if i did get a code out of it, i wouldnt know what it meant lol.............

behind the passengers side head light are 2 small black boxes,1 marked A ,and 1 marked B.on box A there is a small wire insert the wire into the hole marked 1 then turn the ignition key to position 2 but not started.then on the box narked A push the small button for 1 second then release it.the small red light will flash a code back as a 3 digit number.there is a short pause between flashes for a single digit and long pause between the different numbers.example:
a 121 would look like this flash.....flash..flash....flash
write down each code, then after the first code repeats its self then press the button for 5 seconds the light will light when pressing button then go out when released, then the light will light steady again when it does press button fo 5 seconds again, this should have reset the check engine light

its behind the drivers side unless in other contrys they have it on the passenger side

cameron
Saturday 11th April 2009, 00:44
Firstly its on the drivers side ;)

And thats what i tried and it is hit and miss tbh

It does work but how many tries it will take is unknown.

Could be lucky and get it first time could take 20 attempts

If your going to disconnect the battery make sure you have the code for the radio ;)

cameron

Maybe on Left Hand Drive pete ;)

And this..........................

Gather Codes;
Ignition off
Stick the flylead attached to the cover into A2 socket
Ignition on
press the button next to the led once
Codes appear as blinks, copy down the code onto paper.
Press button again after code displayed to see next code.
After all codes displayed, codes repeat.
(ie continue copying down codes until first code repeats.)
1-1-1 means nothing's there (hopefully, all OK).
Switch off ignition.

Reset system;
Ignition off
Stick the flylead attached to the cover into A2 socket
Ignition on
press the button next to the led once for about five seconds
release
red LED will light
when lit, press the button next to the led again for about five seconds
red LED goes out
Ignition off, keep the flylead attached to the cover into A2 socket
Ignition on
press button once for a second, ensure codes are cleared
or write down code(s) repeat code gathering procedure

@@@UPDATE@@@

Checked the oil, oh dear! Needs a change, its brown and smells "burnt", also level was low by 1ltr!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also did the shifting fast through the gears thingy...... And hey presto! its sorted! mind you had to clear the codes b4 it would start??????????
Anyway light is off and g/box back to normal! PHEW!

great news mate well done but i think that due to the fact that the gear shifting thing seems to have cleared it that likely means the PNP switch is on it's way did mine last year cost £95 iirc from Braydons volvo fitted it myself.

next thing i would do is a major gearbox fluid change MAKE SURE YOU USE THE RIGHT STUFF!
I was advised on my 95 gle to use DEXRON 3.
