Hi all,

My mates just picked up an S40 T4 from Fleet (someone may know of a
sale yesterday).

Anyway,he called me & asked if i knew the running temp which i dont.

The car is running between 82 & 100 during normal running.

Is this ok?

Yeah that's normal.

That's a huge margin. My 2.0T runs at a steady 93, I would think similar for the T4.

Anything above, say, 110C is bad. It's really bad if the light comes on...

But I don't think you have a problem there. My 2.0T has a running range of 68C (cool day, motorway cruising) - 102C (stuck in traffic). Obviously the fan comes on and cools it down back to about 95C.

If you're worried, do the usual checks - coolant level, fuses for the fan, leave it and make sure the fan comes on around 102C.

Thanks for the advice guys.

He tells me that he was driving at around 70mph & then met a traffic jam
which held him up 10mins or so. The temps rose from 78 to 93,98 & then
101 before he started moving.

When he eas on his way again the temps held around the 89 mark.

He is going to check for a sludgy dipstick & see if he smell oil in the
header tank.

He also said that when the car started, a little puff of smoke which
dissapeared was seen but after a few seconds it cleared up.

I think the engine is sound so hopefully he has nothing to worry about.

Hi all. Thanks to Snoop for asking, I am the mate with the T4. Seem to be not going over the 102 but that was at standstill for about 10 mins.

Oterwise running seems fine.

Although will do some tests tomorrow.

Can anyone (whilst i am here) recommend the best oil to stick in..

Mate that is fine. All the T4s I've ever had are in that range in normal driving. Fan at 102 as has been said. Rare to see below 84ish during driving.

That all sounds pretty normal. Doesn't look like there's any reason to panic - he's probably just used to seeing a temp gauge with just 'Cold' and 'Hot'.

Personally I wouldn't worry too much about the puff of smoke either, unless it gets worse or there are other problems evident. Which reminds me, I must contact Rufe about that fuel pressure regulator to sort out my starting and smoke problem.

I suspect a quick trip to a garage for an oil/filter change would provide some reassurance.
