some smoke from dipstick

hello all i have smoke coming out of the dipstic when the dipstick is pulled out 'its not thick black smoke'.i've found out this can be fixed or reduced if the pcv system is changed or rebuilt.is this true? and is there a kit that can be purchased to do this? i'm not doing it myself as i don't have a driveway and anywhere to do it and the mechanic i use 'my uncle who works on police vehicles strange enough'hasn't done one of these before? would apreciate help if possible many thanks james sheffield

Hi. It will be the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) that needs replacing. You can get it as a kit from a volvo dealer including the new pipes. Think it costs around £80 I found this for ya !!

flyingbrick is right very common fault. I would get it done sooner than later bec it will blow you Rear main old seal if you don't and that's a lot of ££££££. Call RT Mechanics they keep it all on the shelf. Hope that helps

this is natural on 850 t5 m8 it is cauzed my sump compression .
from the bottom of the engine .& is nothing to worry about mine does the same .

I think your knowledge of these cars is somewhat lacking , i appreciate you are trying to help but ignoring a blocked PCV system is going to create more problems cost wise than a lot of these 850`s are worth so i think for the 70 odd quid it costs in parts id do the PCV system as suggested :)

Just changed mine yesterday, you can EASILY do it yourself, don't think you really need to pay any garage to do it unless you just have no spare time. I just did mine on the road outside my house, you don't need to jack the car or anything.

I got my bits off Rufe here on the Forum, cost £69 all in including delivery.

Give yourself a day to do it so you don't need to rush anything as its a bit fiddly, but for a turbo car there is plenty of room under the hood to squeeze you arms around etc.

Mine wasn't smoking from the dipstick once the engine was warm but just changed anyway as I've only owned my 850R for 5 months so unsure whether it had ever been done before, and at 134k, needs to be done regardless of Volvo not having a service interval for the change. At £69 and a 1/2 days work I thing the preventative maintenance is worth every penny.

This was the link I used to do it http://lakesidedp.com/uploadpics/pcv/, but I removed the fuel rail and injectors separately as this is a LOT easier as you then don't need to remove the fuel lins that go into the fuel rail. Thought it best to reserrect this thread than start a new one.

I had my full PCV system replaced by Volvo about 1k miles ago, but I notice there is still a little bit of a puff from the dipstick. It isn't smoke, it is more of a sort of "heat haze" affect. Is this something I should be worried about? I am taking the car down to Preston on Friday, and I don't want it giving me any hassle.

BTW, the car is a 1994 with 109k miles on it, and has Volvo history before I bought it. The car drives fine, with no noticable issues (except the obligatory rear oil leak).

Same oil as me, unsure of the heat haze thing, maybe just condensation removing itself :confused:

Ive got the same thing i got my pcv done by readview about 5 months ago and never had any problems, so i wouldnt worry about it mate :B_thumb:

Clueless mate as that is spot on. All I can think of is the PCV replacement was sub-standard. Other option is to fit a catch-tank.....

The PCV kit was bought from RUFE (so genuine), and was fitted by a Volvo dealer (mind you, that might not mean anything, lol).

I was looking into a catch tank, but thought it wasn't really necessary.

Hopefully it is nothing, I just thought there might have been a obvious problem with it.

Checked mine at the weekend, due to a thread asking advice on the VOC, whilst changing the engine oil and filter on mine. I had the PCV system renewed by a Volvo main dealer @87k the car has now done 98k the engine oil and filter has been renewed at the very least every 3k sometimes less and I noticed nothing from the dipstick that caught my attention this weekend when checking and I run Silkolene 5w40 engine oil.
