Guys as i dont have an OBC i have little means of working out how much fuel i am using, just the fuel bills but im sure im over fuelling.

I need to know whether you think this high.

Usual day, short trip - school run (car fully warms up though) 3miles max
Trip to work - Motorway run average 70 - 80mph distance 26miles there and back.

So each day an average of 30 miles call it. Add on a bit for the weekends and call it approximately 60miles a week distance.

I am spending approximately £45 a week on fuel = 75p per mile.

Lambda light is on and has been for some time, (gonna get the codes read this morning hopefully) Could be O2 sensors????

Does anyone else doing regular mileage per week spend this amount on fuel?

Help me Obi Wan Kenobi your my only hope....... :wtf:

I get 260 miles for £50, so i think you may be using a bit more than you should. Especially that quite a bit is motorway miellage.

Your doing well mate, A worked that out to be probs a full tank (£53) so £45 is probs about right. A only average around 21mpg and a gallon isnt far off £5 now, Also thats 5 at least morning cold starts and the same in evening cold starts which sookd the go go juice :slap:

Cheers guys but could this be a problem on the horizon????

Not sure if i can afford to keep up fuel costs at the mo.

Ive used £110 in 11 days.....which would average at about £300 a month.

Thats heavy expenditure.

To give you a comparison I do M1, M25 & M20 (Leicester to Kent) on £59.00 of fuel. 165 miles there and 165 miles back.

If i drive like a Nun,I have got nearly 400 miles to a tankful, But at the weekend I put in £35 on the Saturday in Birmingham and 160 miles later gone, But that was travelling at 90-130 m'way and blats around Brum/London.

I get anywhere between 360 to 420 mi per tank, solely dependant on traffic onditions. Trip is saying 27 MPG for last 5 tanks. Highest I've had is 28.9 over about 10 tanks.

Work & back is 820 mi per week so 2 tanks @ average £55 per tank. I use Optimax for average 4/5 fills, and run REDEX in maybe 1/3 tanks. Sadly tho got Texaco 97 ron in today, don't like it, much more lumpy on tickover. Back to Opti at lunchtime.

I can get 30-35mpg if I get her in top quickly and drive her off boost and dont exceed 2500 rpm in any gear!
But that has only happened a few times, most of the time time my computers saying 23-26 mpg thats with a fair bit of mixed driving and currently showing 24.9.
Ive tried my best one week to see if I could get her in the teens thrashing her everywhere and all town work I strugled to get her below 20.4 mpg!

i managed 37.7 mpg on the trip computer over 180 miles yesterday sat at between 60-65mph.I could not drive like that for a whole tank though very dull.I was surprised how economical it was though :remybussi

On the last tank full i averaged 25.6mpg... that included a 220 mile round trip to Bridlington doing 70 - 100mph and having fun on A roads.

Filled up yesterday, done 35 miles average 18.3mpg round town.

I am only getting about 120-130 mile per £20.00. Does that sound alot?
that will be alot of knocking around town and a bit of motorway miles...

I do have the odd burst now and again!! :slap:

On one of my enthusiastic trips from my house to my girlfriends which is exactly 40miles the car would get through a tenner in fuel, however cruising at 70 it would return 33mpg no problems.

Thing is dave, its only reading 20.7-20.9 on my computer?? Are they accurate or not?

My brothers mpg meter on his BMW is just a joke, up down, up down what a waste of time!! You would never get an accurate reading from it.

So anyway back to volvo..... if it works out at 26ish my computer is a mile away!!! get it !! Mile away.... :slap:

I reckon it all depends on when you reset it. If I reset mine as I begin the downhill motorway stretch on the way home, my average over the whole tank will always be higher than if I reset it from a cold start on the town section in the morning.
Also, a pet hate of mine, is that after successfully getting the ave mpg above 30 by driving conservatively during the day, when I turn the engine on the next morning I have lost ~0.3mpg! Where does this go overnight?!? Slow fuel leak? Or does the car drive itself (uneconomically) while I sleep?

Yes they do - some of the more lively ones go clubbing or out on the pull for TT's or Boxters :remybussi . Mine often comes back in a right state, hungover, kebab wrappers, and a string of mobile numbers ----------- it's a reat tart.

some heavy right feet out there, I regularly get 30-32 from mine standard t5 though and mostly 'A' roads. On the accuracy question the only way to do it is to fill the tank to the top, drive it round all week and go back and refill to the top.

Fuel required to refill \ miles run = mpg

I know it uses more fuel carrying round a full tank but its the only real way to know if your computer is accurate.

yep, agree, only way to be spot on, the trip computer works sometimes, but generaly, its higher mpg on trip, but in reality its worse!

We were managing just under 40mpg in Jacqs T4 on the way back from London, sitting at 80-90 most of the way, its not as good on day to day driving though.

So, whats the lowest anyone has gotten?

I worked mine out based on Knockhills lap distance and the amount I used in a 2 hour open pit night, it was in to the single figures, ouch. Obviously this was VERY spirited lol.

A 106 diesel is very frugal.
A 850T5 is very thirsty (and quick).
Your choice! ;)

My trip resets itself everytime you turn the engine off, thanks Cambridge Constabulary:( and there is no trip computer. But, driven with a fair amount of right boot, always taking the long way home down the lancs and the odd 40mile run, mine does about 28 ish. Thrash it and it drinks faster than me :jaw:

The Alfa has all the computery bits on it. At 60 it will do 45mpg. At 80 its down to 32. Higher and its T5 consumption :slap:

Well im pretty sure im over fuelling.

Ive put in 20 litres exactly and am going to drive until i use that up, ive recorded my mileage and set my tripmeter.

I dont have a computer on mine so it makes it more difficult.

Steady 70 yesterday the needle didnt move though all the way to work.

I looked through the sutotrader though and apart from a 306tdi or a BWM 5 series 525tds there is nothing at all that appeals to me, The volvo just has everything you want. so i'll get the codes read and perhaps do a stage 0 tune up and see how i get on. I dont ever remember using this much fuel when i first got it thats all, im sure i used about £30 a week same mileage.

A friend of mine has a evo 7 with an uprated turbo,he does a full tank a day!!
And he reckons he isnt thrashing it all the time.....

He says the needle is visibly moving in first second & third gear!!!

I feel a bit better running the R now....

I get between 24.5 and 25.6 on most tankfulls - and the OBC is accurate as I have checked it manually by brimming the tank numerous times -for my daily driving.

I have a 15 miles each way drive to work on "challenging" B roads, and the usual pottering about through the week. The most it's ever done was 29.7 on a long run down to Portsmouth at 85-90 ish the whole way and back..

Car is a 2000 V70N T5 with a BSR upgrade. I run a K&N replacement filter and use ZX1 in the engine and gearbox. Also, I only use 95 RON petrol, albeit with some REdline Si1 fuel additive..

Pretty happy with that in all honesty. Work cars ( I am a cop) are considerably worse. 150 miles or so on a night shift typically yields about 16 mpg..

Forgot to mention.

I used to have a 335 bhp Graham Goode modified Escort Cosworth that averaged 19/20mpg for daily driving and a lot less when driven "enthusiastically"..

And before that I had an Impreza. A WRX STi Type 4 import job that I used to use for a weekly commute from Cornwall to Sheffield (a 700 mile round trip.) At moderate motorway speeds (90-ish) it did about 19 mpg. On a B road "showing off" session, 12 mpg was occasionally seen. That car also would not even entertain anything other than 98 RON or 97 RON with Millers Octane Plus.. I leave the fuel bill to your imagination...

Both were running spot-on and were much loved and fettled examples, so they weren't running rough.... :slap:

Nice to see "a cop" cruising at realistic motorway speeds

Anyway ive done 100 miles on 20 litres on 95 RON unleaded, steady driving.

This means a full tank would take me 350 miles.

Perhaps its my driving style or perhaps ive done some trips this month ive forgotten about? Its settled the Volvo stays
