As you may know I bought a set of black projector h/lamps of Mickhoon last week - thanks for a top deal Mick :B_thumb:

The quality seems ok, but i do have a couple of observations for those of you who might get these lamps.

The sidelight bulb (the 5w wedge) is accessed through a rubber grommet in the base of the lamp unit and this means that you will have to remove the lamp to change the bulb. Not the end of the world, but not as convenient as standard.

On one of the lamps I found that the captive threaded part that mounting bolts screw into were being drawn out when I was tightening the bolts. I countered this by placing a washer between the headlight body and the car, which meant that the threaded piece couldn't be drawn through towards the bolt head (did that make sense?). I think there were maybe meant to be washers like that there as standard, but there wasn't anything there on mine.

The lamps come with manual height adjusters but my car had the motorised ones on the standard lamps. Swapping the motors over to the new lamps was very simple and that all seems to work ok.

I fitted HIDs to the dip beam at the same time (cos Mick threw them in FOC) and that was a lot easier than I imagined. I'm very happy with the light output and the beam pattern looks ok.

Anyhoo, pics as promised - from my phone so not best quality.

Quick addition: it's been pointed out to me that - if your fingers are the right length/width - you can get in to change the sidelight bulb with the lamps in place.

I don't think my fingers fall into that category, so removing the lamps is the way for me (it's not so difficult anyway).

look good mate. perhaps put LED's in the side lights as they would last much longer than a regular bulb.

Looks really good, blacks the only colour that suites these lights IMO.
Mick is a good guy to deal with.

With regards to the mount screws coming out, this is a common problem with these lights - There is some posts and "How to fix..." on the volvospeed forums etc.

They look great though.

looks 100 times better.. the black really suits your car! very stealth!!! :)

regarding the captive nut issue - I found this thread on VS:

although it sounds like your approach worked just as well! :)

Thanks Pangster, the fix in that thread look like a good idea. I'll probably look to do that in the near future just to make sure they don't pull out or come loose.

Small update on the projectors.

The sidelight on them is pretty poor, so I've wired up a set of LED 'halo' type things to come on with the sidelights.

Whaddya reckon?

nope.. not in my opinion (which probably doesn't count for much! LOL!) - you did a good job and it looks as though this was the way they left the factory! :) If I do get the chrome ones you can do the same for me - now you've had practice to perfect your technique!! ROFL! :B_thumb:

I'm not sure about the good job bit, all the messy wiring is hidden!

I got my inspiration from this thread over on VS: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=105117

I ordered the same LED strips as mentioned in that thread (from Oznium) but in white.

I was considering putting them in the sidelight position like that guy did, but I wasn't sure so I've left them out (I ordered enough though).

I didn't use hot glue like the post on VS, I used 3M tape that came with the strips and just stuck them to the metal outer of the actual projector.

It *should* last ok.....

Is it just me or do those lights not fit properly? The indicators stick out by what? an inch, inch and a half? Or is it just the angle?

In the later pics (with the LEDs) the lights are fitted with headlamp protectors, that might explain what you're seeing.

The first pics in the thread don't have them.

If I'm honest, they probably don't fit quite as neatly as genuine lamps but they don't look out of place to me.

Thought the guys who made them had got their measurements all wrong lol

Yosser, your DIY skills are impressive.... most impressive!

Bet you're glad you did it now!

Looks Minted!

Thinking of HID's myself at some point soon! Pity they don't do a decent styling light set for the P2's yet! Even clear glass with visible bulbs like the P3 (new) ones have!

Oh well, back to farting at the force 10 again!
