I think the turbo that hamish offers is a 16t hybrid turbo as for this the last time i spoke to hamish he told me the best thing to do was to get forged conrods and pistons also would you be fitting the parts your self if not i think the bill will be alot more than 2k

As per chris's post are there any p1's or 850's out there with the hamish modified 16T..?..the only other cars i know of are hamish's v70 and joules v70 both me7. you've heard chris's advice, hamish has given you his(he sells them) ask joules(loadsamiles) fair comparison..?. bigger than a 19T,the gt28 not alot or gt30 (big) but who custom maps..??..MTE..(you'l find lots of people who've had a rica now have an mte, (be it just because there capable of pure custom mapping), but i cant think i've heard of anyone going from an mte to a rica/hlm map..

Warren,

There are at least 3 of the earlier cars (Motronic 4.3 or 4.4) that I have fitted our Hybrid to with no known problems. 1 did have modified internals. We have supplied and fitted this turbo to 5 of the later cars (ME7). And supplied 3 others! Laterly we have Hybridised the KKK on a couple of the late model 2.4T5 and these have proved to be reliable as well as very fast!. The HLM Turbo is far better than a GT28 in this Volvo application getting very close to a GT30 but more sensible low down. There are plenty of people who can custom map, we now have 2 people doing our custom maps when required and both are far more experienced than Adam was or even Roel! One thing is sure I haven't seen anything with a Boost Map of Death leave my workshop in the last year. I am asked on a regular basis to overwrite other tunes, normally Supercheaps or Ebay/Mobile Specials however I have overwritten MTE tunes! If you want our hybrid turbo but want to use someone elses software thats no problem I am happy with that.
It may come as a surprise but most people who own and/or tune Volvos never go near a forum.

Regards,
Hamish.

These 16T Hybrids don't seem to appear to perform any better than a good standard turbo when ran on an independent dyno. I would ask the opinion of the owner of one of these turbos who went from standard to Hybid and back to standard as he will have nothing to gain from the information he gives.

If you have the time it might be worth looking at some compressor maps for the turbos you are thinking of getting as just fitting bigger or slightly better designed wheels in an already small housing will exaggerate the problem of excessively high intake air temperatures. If this happens on an 850 or Phase 1S70, C70, V70 melt down can and does happen! If it is on a 1999 on ME7 engined car then very inconsistent performance on the road will be the result as Loadsamiles will be able to confirm and show graphs to prove.

I have nothing to benefit from this and just want to help others avoid the problems some have encountered.

Thanks

Tim

Follow advice from a variety of sources and make your own mind up before going to anyone for specific work. Mr Williams has been more than helpful to me and is very knowledgeable on our model cars. If you ask him nicely (pester him in some cases, lol) he always obliges with the exact thing you need. He can do some good work too which compliments work you may have done already.

I'm still quite happy with this "Hamish" turbo.

I can safely discount my last dyno results as the wastegate was found to have lost it's pre-load (Tell Hamish that you want a NEW actuator fitting, not a used one sprayed black)

All in all it's very smooth and very very responsive.

The only issue is that in order to gain best performance you'll have to up the intercooler or probably add water injection. Compression temperatures are quite an issue even at 1.4 bar due to the small size of the compressor, but it's that small compressor that gives it the responsiveness so going bigger isn't necessarily going to gain you anything.

I know that Chris's turbo was dissected and analysed. The specialist who did this said it was a good turbo. It's a 16T body with KKK/IHI internals, but the KKK wheel isn't from a Volvo KKK It's believed it's from an Audi.

Personally I'd recommend getting an MTE custom map for it. As Hamish rightly said Adam's map was ££££ and all it did to my car was cause the ME7 to constantly go into it's protection routines.

Here is an intake temperature plot from my car.

You may wish too check this out though with regards to price against HLM.

It looks very familiar....:mischievo:mischievo:mischievo

I can't say it's the same item, but to my eyes the similarities are suprising. Even to the sprayed black wastegate actuator.

E-bay...

Do a search for MTE or Don Norchi

Make sure you look at fueling and cooling as part of the deal.
