Noticed the other day that I had a noise on tickover. Checked it today and it's coming from either.... the power steering pump or the aircon compressor. Being as the cars had no gas in the aircon for an age now I'm leaning towards it being that, is there any danger of it failing while I get around to buying a replacement??.

Hi tc what type of noise is it does it sound like a clicking every so often or is it a constant click also if the gas is low in the compressor it will stop working to protect its self can you see if the pully is spinning

if its the ac pump pully then it will eventually get worse & make some nasty noises then it may fail which will throw the aux belt off,i think you can get a belt from a non ac to fit it,then it doesnt run the ac,

Just sounds like a whining/clicking type noise, not very loud but loud enough to be annoying.

Wouldn't the pulley spin either way if the belt is going over it?, how would it stop itself?. I presume there's a clutch mechanism on the pulley.

if your air con gas is low the compressor shuts off my pully didnt spin untill the air con was regassed n i had `a leak so about 2months later when the gas was back to being low the pully stoped

Kwik Fit will do a re-gas for £25.00, and IF they dont fix/get it cold, they wont charge you at all ;)

when i switch on my a/c i hear the click of the clutch cutting in, then every few seconds it just keeps cutting in and out, would this also be due to lack of gas? if so kwik-fit sounds a good option.

I presume there's a clutch mechanism on the pulley.I had somethign similar which was most noticeable when I had the windows open and it turned out to be becasue the front disks were worn and the pads were moving around causing this noise. I bought a replacement p/steering pump on advice before I got the local specialist to take a look - I took it in to get the pump replaced and he said that they rarely go on 850s so he listened on a test dirve and reported the error's true cause.

If it does turn out to be the 850 p/s pump LMK and you can come and get this one, gratis

It's very possible that this is the case as a low gas level will cause the compressor to cycle as quickly as you are describing and a regas is one of the cheaper things to try first. ;)

when the ac is switched on you should hear a click of the clutch on the pulley engaging the compressor, make sure you actualy have your blowers switched on, as if there on 0 and u turn the ac switch nothing will happen, hope thats it mate.

I've had the clicking from the compressor as it cuts in and out for ages (due to low gas), can't remember hearing it recently though..

Oh, also I've started to hear a buzzing as well that sounds like the fuel pump, hope that's not on it's way out too.

so what does it mean if i dont hear a click. and what will happen if there is no gas. i dont ever use the ac and dont realy care if i have it. so i was just gona leave it un-gassed. so if its not gassed will it cause problms

Tbh not using it won't cause any fault to the car as the clutch won't engage the compressor if the system isn't switched on. But if the compressor isn't engaged it could sieze which when it is engaged could cause the aux belt to be thrown off the pulley or snapped meaning that the alternator and power steering pump will loose drive. Tbh it might well be worth getting it regassed by the likes of Kwik Fit just to get the system in use for a little while. Think of that hot day next year us Brit's call summer you can enjoy it driving along in your air conditioned 850 :)

Whilst searching for a decent driveshaft i borrowed a neighbours
V70r for a little while. It had been stood for a few months & within
a few minutes of running, the aircon pump started bellowing out
plumes of smoke.

It turned out to be the pump clutch which was seized & was chucking
out bits of clutch, sparks & allsorts.

Niles & myself thought it was going to catch light so we dived into a
local hairdressers, borrowed the kettle & chucked loads of water over it.

And no,we didnt get our hair cut

Niles fitted a non aircon belt as a temporary repair which took him
around 10mins to fix.
