View Full Version : T4 burning oil at idle

Hi. I need to fix a problem ASAP for my MOT re-test.

My 1997 V40 1.9 T4 smokes like a chimney when it has idled for 10-15 mins. The smoke is definately oil, and this is supported by the fact that I have to top the oil up regularly.

I've also found oil in the big air hose that connects the idle speed valve to the top of the rad (sorry, not sure what the hose is called).

The car failed its emissions tests at the MOT 2 weeks ago. I cleaned the idle speed valve, put two bottles of oil treatment (for smokey engines) in, and had the emissions tested again. It passed all but the 'natural idle' which was 9.99%!

I'm guessing these two things are connected because the car only smokes at idle.

I've read some posts about other Volvo turbo models smoking when some kind of oil return pipe, connecting the turbo to the engine (or sump) gets blocked, and wondered if this could be the case with mine? If so, how easy is this to clean out?

Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

Phil.
