Being as full time employment is evading me at the moment it looks like I'm going to have time to get the carbon fibre splitters sorted. I have one to work from (thanks Greg), now it's nearly repaired I can take a mould from it and start producing them. I did have a brief go at carbon fibre a while back that wasn't too succesfull,so if I can't get the carbon to work out this time then I shall make them out of fibreglass with a black gel coat finish. Photo's shall follow next week when I have the master ready for molding.

I haven't decided on a price yet as it depends how easy they are to make, however they'll not be too expensive. Anyone interested can let me know in the thread. Cheers!!!!

Thanks again Greg, it's very good of you to donate it to a good cause, lol. The splitters back in one piece now, I've just got to clean it up, paint it(sad to bury that carbon under paint but it has to be done), then I can take a mould off it. Greg, yours is the first one.

No problem with donation it's a plesure to share with other Volvo lovers they do look cool, glad its working well, was it hard to put back together again? my mother recked it origonaly so i may just put it on for meets as when i am away mother gets my car, anyone with an R bumper, it will finish it off and look the biss trust me.

Attached is a pic showing the original carbon fibre splitter on my old t5r.It fitted perfectly. Chris has one on his s70 t5 and it fits but it hangs over the edges slightly more than it does on the 850's.

Here's what it looks like on a S/V70R bumper. It is designed for an 850R bumper, but does fit the S/V70R's quite nicely still.

You can't get them any more i had a good search a while back they did come from a Canadian company Called Gemini who now make only cannoes, I even asked other company's over hear to make them from my one and told them that i would have 20 of them but still they would not do it.
So good luck you can try asking as i did but they will not do it.

Tomcat
Thursday 13th November 2008, 21:45
Right you mythering bunch of......lol....

The original is back in one piece and just needs a coat of paint before it's ready for moulding. The problem I have at the moment is that I've been working all week(finally), trouble is I've been doing 12-13 hour days so it's not leaving much time for anything else. If I can find the time Saturday I will paint it, after that it's just a case of ordering the stuff I need.

Lee

Tomcat
Friday 14th November 2008, 23:16
There's two places I use for paint, one charges about £15-£20 a litre for matched paint, the last time I used them for that colour it took five attempts and it still wasn't even close. The other place charges about £50 a litre but it was almost perfect first time out.

Let us know on the price Craig as I would like one. Carbon it need not be as I drive around some horrible roads in Brum with some very high speed bumps so fibre glass would be okay. Could you pain in the T5 olive green? Do you still want a rear strut brace I could do a deal with:D.

Tomcat
Monday 24th November 2008, 19:50
Ok, I've been to my supplier today and bought the supplies to make a mould and the first two prototypes. Fibreglass ones in a black gelcoat finish will be the cheapest to make as the prices are cheap, Carbon will be expensive at £28 a sq metre(+ Vat), plus the price of the clear resin, Vacuum bagging equipment etc.. The only way the carbon ones will work out cheaper is if I can make them without resorting to Vacuum bagging, I'm not hopefull though as I've tried wet layup with Carbon before and it just doesn't like tight bends. If I need to Vacuum bag the carbon then I will need to buy a Vauum pump as well which is around £300.

I appear to not be working again tomorrow so, provided the master is dry(it wasn't today) then I will get the mould made and possibly try and make the first two prototypes (one of each). If I had to guess on prices at the moment I'd say about £80 for a fibreglass one and at least £150 for a carbon one(plus postage), however this is only a guestimate at present.

Little update, the mould is finished and I have the first fibreglass one in it at the moment drying. Should know either tomorrow or Monday how it's turned out, I'll post pics up as soon as it's out and trimmed.

Tomcat
Monday 1st December 2008, 16:10
Ok, I have good and bad news.....

The bad news is that the first one to come out of the mould hasn't turned out that great, I tried to hurry things up during build up by speeding up the drying with a hot air gun. It would seem that the gel coat in particular doesn't like this and has wrinkled and bent itself, this has lead to the finished splitter being a bit out of shape in places.

The good news is that it did come out of the mould ok and all I need to do for the next is not to fiddle with the drying, it will take longer as it's been bleedin' freezin this past few days(even with a heater in there). So, anyone wanting a black fibreglass splitter should pm me, price is £80 plus postage, postage shouldn't be any more than £20, however I will know for definate once I price it up.

The carbon fibre ones will come a little later as I have a few kinks I need to work out before I can even consider trying to make one. I will also need to get some more cash together as the carbon is very expensive, I am however, going to be doing them as a composite to keep the prices down(i.e. carbon, fbireglass). This will give you the look of carbon but not make them ridiculously expensive to make.

Ok, I have 4 that are ready bar painting, and I have one that's just needing a little more fibreglass. I need to go out to get some more glass and resin but it's going to be at least Friday before I can manage that. Hopefully they should all be finished next week and ready for posting.

Depending on funding I should be in a position to try a carbon one next week, I'm only trying a small section though. If it all works out then I will start taking orders for them shortly afterwards.

I think it depends on what the width of the lip under the t5 bumper as to weather there is enough room to fit securley

Tomcat
Thursday 22nd January 2009, 20:01
Width wise it would probably fit, but as Pete's already said you may not have enough plastic underneath the standard bumper for it to fix to.

Volvostorm
Thursday 22nd January 2009, 20:46
That would be a shame, as I like the splitters, but only have a T5 bumper.

Could you design or modify the splitter for us 'lesser' non R bumper owners? :P

Tomcat
Thursday 22nd January 2009, 21:11
The splitter as it is would fit, however if you go stick your head under your front bumper tomorrow you'll see that the lip underneath is only a couple of inched wide. If you think that you can attach a splitter to it then go for it,lol.

Would think you could fix a bit of rigid plastic to the existing bumper, bond and rivet, to give you the equivalent lip to fix to? Will check when I get mine.

Tomcat
Thursday 12th February 2009, 13:26
Ok, managed to get both pieces finished and they've turned out a 100 times better than my last attempt with carbon, there are still a few defects but most of those are down to the drying times(me trying to pull it out the mould before it was properly dry) and having defects in the moulds. I'm going to buy a halogen heater to help with the drying process as it's just taken three days to get these two dry, I also need to make a new mould as it needs to be perfect.

Blimey £150 quid sounds like good value for a genuine carbon splitter. Depending on how the grp one holds up, i.e I don't smash it up on a kerb, I may have one of those in the future :)

Tomcat
Thursday 12th February 2009, 20:36
Just to be clear, this is a "Composite" splitter, i.e. it's 2 layers of carbon followed by 2 layers of Fibreglass for stiffness.

Sunday 15th February 2009, 22:50
The ones I've just done are finished in black get coat, but I wasn't over chuffed with the finished so I've painted them satin black. The Carbon ones should be really good if I can get my head around working with the carbon, we shall see tomorrow.

TC Mate, Mine arrived Friday - well wrapped and I am well rapped ;>)

Excellent stuff.

I will post pics as I go about fitting it.
Early checks show it will fit a non-R bumper but with some mods needed - due to the lenthg of the lip comapred with the standard bi8umper et6c. Bit a bit of filler and a rasp should see it done no worries.
Cheers

I got my R bumper fitted today, sprayed up from Olive Green to Dk Tropical Green. Need to refit the air vents and foggies, then on goes the splitter. Will post up som epics - hope to have done by next weekend. Meanwhile I have both bumpers so if anyone needs any comparisons, measurements etc let me know.
I do know the R bumper is 60mm deeper than the standard, so my front is 95mm ish lower than when I bought the car and the splitter will add another 20mm or so. Lets hope the policemen sleeping in the road arent too fat! :>)
It looks blooming lovely.
I will get some pics of the splitter lined up to the OLD bumper before I bin it as I know some folks had that in mind.
Happy bunny hunting

Here's a couple of pics - before and after fitting the splitter I got off Tomcat and the R bumper which I got off Ebay.

Had the bumper fitted by the garage repairing the damage obvious in the "before" pic where I found that Armco is harder than an 850 ;>)

I put the splitter on with 10 self drilling screws and some silicone sealant - shows white but dries clear.

Also moved across the meshed vents off teh old one. Made these with some plastic gutter mesh from Aldi (3.99 a roll) and a hot glue gun. Took about 45 mins.

really pleased with the effect - just need a clean now - the photos horrified me.

Very strange, I replied to this yesterday and it seems to have vanished....ah well.

I'd never say never but they where a pain in the arse to make and to ship, however, if there was enough demand and if I could find a better way to make the mould last longer then I'd do some more yeah.

No takers for this splitter then?, it's gonna be painted tomorrow. If there's no one interested in it then it's going on my car.

i think you should be entitled to a free one for being the official company crash tester

After much analysis it was very clear that the splitter infact bore the full force of the impact and acted as a "collision dampner", significantly reducing the damage to the front end of the car and increasing the chances of minimal driver and passenger injuries.

I would recommend every 850 series model be fitted with said splitters to enhance the already outstanding safety features most of which Volvo invented. I would go as far as to say it may be worth contacting Gothenburg and advising a safety recall to be announced and all 850 series cars fitted with said article.

Your probably looking at at least £500 as I'd need to make a mould which will double the amount of materials it'll need, plus you'd have to collect it as I wouldn't fancy posting something that big, however if more than just yourself wants one then the cost will come down, probably to around the £300 mark.

all told it was £20 for a replacement bumper, in the right colour with fogs in, and a correct size splitter, im not gonna complain. probably less than the postage on a splitter

For anyone who wants one of these i can highly recomend TC, I have had mine for 2yrs and it is still perfect. Better than paying £500 from the states (which seems to be the only place that does these)

TC will not rip you off he is well liked and trusted a top man who does a quality job. For the money he is asking it's a steal.

Thanks again mate for making my car look just that little bit better and glad to see your slowly getting on your feet again

Ok in my previous post I stated the wrong price, price is £110 plus £30 postage. I'm considering ordering some more supplies so if your thinking of ordering can you let me know so I know how much to get.
