My ignition key looks different to those pictured, I think those pictured are pre chipped style key's?

do you have an 850 or x70?

the reason i have asked is because the guy who has bought freakys car was having trouble with it, it wouldnt start yesterday morning!

i had a look at a few things via the laptop & then noticed it has a different ignition key to the door & glovebox! the key didnt look like either of my x70 keys so i wondered if it had had a 850 ignition stuck in it! going by the fotos it looks exactly the same as stainsys key!

it does raise a few questions about how the imobilizer is working tho!!

Sounds like its had a new ignition barrel in the past

If so you have to ask yourself why ;)

yes it has, as the keys are different! it also has 850 wheels on which are incorrect & the airbox is also from an 850.....

all in all its quite odd!!

Mine is an 1996 OBDII 850 and the original ignition key looks like this although I have distorted the end for obvious reasons ;)

I recently purchased a spare key from Volvo and had it coded that looks no different to the S70 and phase one V70 keys as below.

thanks for that, the first key looks like my wifes 1997 s70 key & the second looks like my 1998 v70 key!

the car in question is a 97 model so should have the one you pictured first (which it does for the doors & boot) but for the ignition it has one like stainseys!

I would try holding the other key, the one you think is most likely to be the original, up to the steering cowel around the lock when cranking to see if it fires as the reluctor ring should read the chip code and then the engine should fire. I suspect the car in question should have a chipped key but obviously doesn't hence, maybe, why it isn't starting with the same style of key as Stainseys as this style of key isn't a chip style key :)

With regards to the two key's I have posted pictures of essentially they are the same key just Volvo changed the finish on the end of the key to a softer material which appears to practically disintergrate when it has been used many times.

the car only played up one morning with symptoms that sounded very imobilizer like, my laptop also picked up a fault code showing a transponder fault! but the car now starts with just the 850 key! & the other key no were near! does anyone know how close the chip has to be?

Im slightly lost Mark, what car are you trying to start?...Not all the 850's had chipped keys, infact most of the ones i have come accross did not.., try the tin foil trick to see...
The chipped key must be fairly close to the barrell ring....

afaik all 70 series cars had them.....

when i read the codes it was showing a transponder signal missing fault.....

so how an unchiped 850 key is working in a 70 car is beyond me.....

Yes that is my understanding too....
However the use of an unchipped key could signify the ring is boogered, tho i would ask Chris_Rogers on the Voc for certain clarification...(if you can bear it)....
