I would definately fit an HID Kit.

I wouldn't waste any £'s on buying 'xenon' or other fancy bulbs, I'm sure you can get a decent HID kit for around £40-50, look for either 4300K - 6000K. You will honestly be amazed at the difference these kits make.

How hard are they to fit out of interest?

has anyone on here got these and are they any good.

The kits are very easy to fit. The only modifications I had to make was to cut a round hole into the two protective caps that you remove when you change headlamp bulbs. The kits supply replacement ‘bulbs’ which are connected to two individual ballasts to which your original dipped beam wiring connects to. It really is just plug & play !!

When I fitted mine, I probably spent more time deciding where to locate the two ballasts…I ended up with one on the battery and the other on the ECU cover.

Just like those....although I'd personally order them from a UK seller.

Most of these kits cheaper kits originate from the far east so they're all much the same anyway, but if you order from a UK seller - they're less likely to encounter any delivery problems...hopefully !!!

dianeshop on ebay for the HID kits. They only cost £13 plus £22 delivery. I have two kits one 6000K and one 8000K. If you have self leveling with no electric adjustment you will need to adjust the light beam position as the HID kits are so much brighter. I would buy two kits just incase one breaks as when you have to send parts back they take forever. I had mine break after 6 days use but the seller offered a replacement on receipt of the old unit.

Give the HIDs a go but the 850 h/lights are rubbish ....no spread , no range . I really was amazed when i first drove in country Australia at how bad they were...You cant improve the std lens so i would suggest that you could try clear lens from IPD if you dont want Crystals. Look at the std lights in the sun and they look like "bling' as intended by volvo so i am happy to put crystals with halo angel eyes on my 850R [ had them for months / no time to install them to much work.....] I also have hids to put in them - Linky http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=250297302981http://stores.ebay.com.au/TJM-Trader for Halo Angel eyes......good luck! And on the lower bumper of Rs , i think some-one needs to make carbon fibre ones as i am sick of breaking mine , even when i am sooo carefull.......Anyway thats another topic...

Hi Stephen

Have you any idea if these are dipped / highbeam bulbs or are the highbeam bulbs a different thing?

Cheers

Lee

Hi Lee....The dipped beam and high/main beam are seperate H1 bulbs on most of the 850's. If you wanted the Xenon effect on both dipped beam and main beam, you'd have to buy two HID kits.

Compared to the intense white light that the 4300K HIDs throw out, the standard main beam looked like egg yolks !! These kits are so cheap, converting both low & high beams isn't a problem.

The picture above is that just the setup for the dipped beam?

4 Ballasts?

Hmm where to put them all ?

LOL!

Cheers

cheers guys, will probably go for the two kits, the 6k and the 8k. mines a VERY early 93, so no electric self leveling malarky, just good old adjusters. spose i will have to pop to my local garage, and get them set up.

What I'd do is mark on a wall or garage door where your beam is now & then compare where the beam is after you've fitted the HID kit. You can adjust them yourself if needs be.

Help!! I just ordered some of the 6k HID's, now it seems I'll need another pair for my main beams. What size? 8K? & what H1's?

Got a set on the both the 70's here both from Dianeshop on ebay and its the best mod i ever did. Went for the 4300k bulbs as they are less blue.

I wouldnt recommend using HID on the main beam as they take too long to strike and come up to full power. My 2pence...

Spot on thats what i did with mine and i recon you are about dead right with the power mine are 12000k and to much!

The K value or Kelvin is the colour temperature- the higher the more blue the light. The human eye isn't so responsive to blue so you cannot see the detail or perspective that you can with a more yellow.

Most people suggest 4300k or 6000k are most suitable for car use.

Be sure and check the type of globe as i know mine are diffrnt to the h/lights, but in saying that i want to change my fog/spots as they could be better. Has anyone replaced the R fogs at all ? With a foreign unit...?
