steering help needed urgant

driving back from work today starting off steering sounded like was grinding wheel was very hard to turn when you do get round a corner the wheels pulling the oposite way full luck is almost impossible
while driving theres a strange whistling sound
and when idling and you turn the wheel it seems to effect the engine note
im not sure if its steering rack,pump or whatever but it nearly made me go through a roundabout not to good any ideas ?

Check fluid first!
My 535i used to lock up completely when low on fluid!

Loose or worn hose on the pump, check out the o ring in the pump as they do fail,
