Hi folks, just wondering if anyone can help me solve a very irritating problem...
Have changed out the HU803 and fitted an aftermarket head unit, but now theres a whistling noise that increases with acceleration....I have been told its due to a bad earth on the amp, which i assume is the dolby prologic one, but cant find it??? the new unit is connected to the amp using an autoleads pc9-414 lead, and have tried to earth the connector plug on its metal connector, but still not solving the problem...if anyone knows how to solve this i will be eternally greatful, as its now causing me headaches as much as the missus whining!!

What you need is called a Ground loop isolator.

Bout £10 will get you one from any good car audio supplier!

Either, put a GLI in the phono leads to your amp (making assumptions)

Or, get a solid separate negative to the headunit, either the main negative in (on the loom) or attach it to the headunit casing.

also if it happens when the phono is connected to the SW out, try the rear outs (set them up for SW) this may solve it.

cheers.

I have it on good authority that "The ground/isolation of the line input is at 12v offset to the ground of the car. This means that you can't really use common ground between PC and AMP...which means noise."
As you can see this is refering to a PC but the concept is the same.

Try the GLI, its only £10-15 but if it makes no difference then the only other option would be bypassing the OEM amp and fitting your own.

Had a similar problem when installing a Sensolutions MII RCA input adaptor onto my HU-803.
Connected a GLI into the phono sockets and it did the trick.

My mate cegc70t had a very similar issue regarding whistling in the speakers, his pitched with acceleration.

GLI & plugging into the RS out instead of the SW channel sorted it all.

Part of the noise is due to the head unit, part to the amp.

GLI sorts the amp out (usually), switching the out from the head unit may clear it completly.

Looks like i will have to find a good online retailer for the GLI ( as our top quality ICE merchants here had no idea what im on about!!).
But what does "plugging into the RS out instead of the SW channel" mean?
Sorry to be a bit thick but not very technical on the ice stuff, took me long enough to change the unit and get all the right leads, and Jersey isnt exactly a hotbed of information or installations!!
Thanks for all the help so far, I might get the car back to its superior standard...

Rear speaker out (if there is more than one RCA tha's the red & white sockets, then one will bw SW (sub woofer) and the second should be your rear speaker.

www.caraudiodirect.co.uk will have a GLI.

Good luck with that one....

Remember, once the loop has been broken, the whistle will stop in all speakers.

The GLI arrived today and has been fitted, but still not completely eliminated the noise, will have to get a ground onto the amp if possible...Does anyone know where they are hidden on a 2001 S60? and easily accessible??

I'm gonna guess in the boot, usually the left hand side, behind the carpet.

failing that, it's gonna be in the centre console or under one of the seats.

Under the drivers seat.
It is a bitch to get to :)

Ahh, they do like to mix it up.

My mate has a c70, his amp is in the boot.

The problem is it is only accessable fron the rear footwell but it is mounted in line with the front edge of the seat. The bolts are under the carpet and the cables are forwardfacing, blocked from front access by the chessis strengthening strut.
The only way I can see to get decent access to the wires is by removing the seat.

a better earth onto the alternator should stop the little bit of interference your getting its something known as alternator whine

sounds like you need a better isolator on the alternator, you can get ones that slip inline of the power and your head unit, they are quite cheap too. or you can get a 60amp one from caraudiodirect.co.uk for like £30 i think
