I have had a couple of scary experiences over the last three months where the rear brake hoses, one then the other have been nicked by the handbrake cable causing loss of fluid and spongy brake pedal - not fun when your loaded up with luggage, wife and kids on an auto route in France trying to rapidly slow down from 80mph! Of even more concern was that the car had just passed its MOT without this being picked up!
On further investigation it transpired that the brake hoses were missing two circular rubber rings which act as buffers between the brake hose and the handbrake cable.
I would urge you to check your rear brake hoses to ensure that you have these rubber rings in place!
