aut. trans. stuck in 4th. gear

Help.
My friends 1998 v70 2,5 20v. Have done this a couple of times and im trying to help him from going in panic....

After a drive where the car have reached top gear - it stays there if he brakes down to standing still......stuck in fourth almost not able to crawl anywhere.

The car is in PERFECT condition, and we flushed the transmission 4 months ago for service reasons only. The car drives perfect and so does the transmission.

Could it be the PNP-switch or the Shift Microswitch ?

Any replies would be much appriciated by my friend.

Could be the PNP switch - with the car off, run the gear lever through all positions about 20 times, see if that makes any difference.

Check the ATF level and condition, if that's all fine, and the gear lever trick hasn't made any difference, you're going to need to have the gearbox codes read.

I take it the transmission arrow has flashed or lit when it's played up?

There's no possiblity of a fault or stickiness with the winter button, is there?
