View Full Version : Engine management light on??

Driving home last night the engine management light came on. It seems to be running ok, just holding its revs and not boosting as quickly. Could it be the maf? I took the sensor clip off as it was running and it didnt seem to make a difference at all, I expected it to cut out.

Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? Can the codes be read on an 850? Is there anyone who could do it for me?

cheers

What model 850 do you have and what year is it? Here is how to use or build code readers to use on your car. If you need any more info just post some questions. http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=42315 This is for 96 models on with the obdII plug below the coin holder. http://www.troublecodes.net/Volvo/ And this one is for earlier models.

cheers bud, I've found that you can read the codes actually on the car. its a 95 by the way.

The codes are: 2-3-1 and 1-2-1

Does anyone know what they mean? or what the problem is and how to solve it?

I'm sure theres somewhere on the site, or try using google, that has the error codes listed?

This may be silly and useless, but my mates car threw up an error when he didnt tighten the fuel cap properly :drunk:

231 relates to the Lambda sensor and 121 relates to the MAF. From what yourdescribing it sounds like a MAF problem as a O2 sensor normally won't cause any problems other than rough Idle or poor running at constant throttle speeds. Try clearing the codes then drive it and recheck the codes again to be sure you're not reading an old code.

2-3-1 is Long term fuel mixture part load

1-2-1 is MAF sensor signal..

got them from here....Fault codes guide linky (http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/tech/service/850/TroubleshootingWithCodes-Turbo.pdf)

http://volvospeed.com/Repair/a2.html Heres a list of codes for you. 121 faulty maf. 231 is fuel trim at limits (too rich) at partial load. I had the second one a while back du to running to high a fuel pressure. You may be seeing it due to a faulty maf signal. Change your maf only if clearing the codes first doesn't work.

Thanks ppl. Ive tried clearing the codes but it isnt working

As i understand it its:

ignition off
lead into a2
ignition on
hold button for 5 secs till light stays on
hold for 5 secs till it goes off?

the light doesnt stay on when you release the button. Am i doing it wrong?

Follow the above links to the letter on how to clear the codes. It can take ages. I have the later one with a home made reader and that can take and has took me 45 minutes once to clear the codes. Just persevere with it.

Agreed, you can't delete codes until they've all been displayed. Let it flash off all the codes, then try deleting them.
