View Full Version : Fitted a rear strut brace today.

I recently saw a product that PFS were selling and thought I would be able to make my own. The rear strut bace they were selling seemed to be expensive for what it was and thought I could use a stronger steel and make it for a lot cheaper than what they were selling them at. Anyway if anyone is interested the one I mde fits the 855 and possibly V70 classic shape Volvos. I may be able to make them for a price should there be any interested parties. The attached photo shows the one I made fitted but it hasn't been painted yet as I wanted to check the fit and see if I could notice any diference. I think that with normal road driving I haven't really noticed any real gains apart from when going over speed bumps, the type where both wheelsnearly miss the speed bump, as the back end doesn't really creak anymore and seems a little more taught.

I'm not sure on prices but was thinking around £30 plus delivery. Does that sound a fair price? If anyone is interested please PM me and I will reply as soon as I can. Drop a note on the thread though so I will know about PMs.

Would this work with the 7 seat conversion being in place?

Alan M
Wednesday 20th August 2008, 23:26
Right then, I'll get onto the people that want them in the next few days. Looks like I will be busy then!

On another note I will be selling a mandrel bent 3 inch downpipe aswell in the coming week and I will post some pics when I can.

No it wont work with the 7 seat conversion in place. It utilises the seat belt bolt locations I think.

Could i not use longer bolts to accomodate both?

Alan M

Not sure mate. If I had a seat to try it out I would be able to say for definate but the seat may go down into the recess where then brace sits.

very well done alan, got say i like these a lot. i may be interested if you could do them for the C70, though i suppose more demand would be needed before you looked at making them for the coupes.

If you have fitted a rear strut brace (or for that matter a front one) make sure and tell your insurance company.

The reason being that in an accident, in particular from the side, the braces actually cause a fair amount of extra damage all on their own.

It's a non standard performance modification.

Just thought I should flag this up to anyone fitting one.

Cheers

The genuine front ones were an optional extra from volvo which does not need to be listed as a performance enhancing product or does it?? I think that the rear should be listed but I was under the impression original fit parts don't need to be.

I told my insurance company this when i fitted my (None standard Volvo modification) and they told me it was actualy a saftey improvment, and thairfore not a modification in the sence that it improved the cars engine performance.
