Old problem I know but just wanted to check. My windscreen is steaming up with and without the AC on and in all weather. Also when its off I'm getting a nasty smell coming out. Any idea's? Filter clean and re-gas?

has your pollen filter been changed? if windows are steaming when AC is on there may be a issue with the AC which could be low on gas.

I had a nasty smell & a visible vapour coming from my heater vents.

Turned out to be a nacked heater matrix.

Check the footwells for damp.

Agreed. This sound like the culprit. You should also check the coolant level in the header tank as it could br getting low if it's been leaking for a while. If it does turn out to be the matrix we can supply you a good used one if req.

Thanks guys. Being a novice how would I find these things to check them. Is the header tank just the coolant tank?
BTW the mats seem dry and I can't check leakage as I park on grass.

Cheers

Yes,the header tank is the coolant tank(under the bonnet on the o/s),if it's not been leaking long the carpets might not be wet yet but if you get your hand under the carpet where the carpet finishes at the front(as close to the centre console as poss and dont forget to check both sides) and see if there is any damp there.

Ok, yes the carpets are slightly damp both sides and the coolant level is down but not too far. What do I do now?!

Thanks for your help by the way.

Well, you need to decide whether it's a job you fancy attacking yourself or not really,if not then you need to be looking around for a local volvo specialist to do the job.A general repair garage could do it no doubt, but it's always best to have someone familiar with the job and model of car.We could do the job if you are anywhere near Accrington in Lancashire, there is RT Mechanics down south and no doubt a few others in the recommended garages sections both here and on the voc website(if the website is still there as they have been having problems)Failing that if you start a new thread looking for recommendations i'm sure someone will point you in the right direction for someone local to you.

I'm in Southampton. The car is due a service so I think I will look into getting it up to rt mechanics. Unless there is anywhere closer? I would like to try it myself but I know I will bodge it.

I did mine with the help of Niles from this forum.

It took us around one a half hours.

Bit fiddly but pretty straight foward with no special tools needed
other than some small 'torx' drivers.

If you do it yourself, get new o rings just in case.

If you dont then from what ive heard,RT would be my choice too :)

I think its best I take it to someone as I use the car everyday and can't afford to have it off the road because i've killed it.

Thanks guys for all you're help

Surely that was on a P1 car though? I replaced my '98 S70 matrix and it was, as you say, not a bad job really (trying to dry up the previously leaked coolant was a different story :-( .

I'd read on here though that the same job on later cars is a dash-out job - it looked like a nightmare.

Cheers,
