Looking at buying an 850R but can't get hold of Super Unleaded where we live. Does the R have to have super? I appreciate performance would be slightly better but would normal unleaded do any harm?

I know with the likes of the Impreza's the ecu adapts to the petrol over a couple of tanks, can the same be said on the R?

Appreciate any advice on this.

Cheers,
Justin :-)

normal unleaded will be fine if you cant get super unleaded, the car has a knock sensor fitted and will compensate for different octane ratings!

That's the problem where we are, one local garage used to stock super but not enough demand. We have no Shell, BP etc. I'm afraid.

Thanks for replies, sounds like I'll be ok with normal.

Justin

unleaded would, i expect not do any damage to the car, however as you suggest it is unlikely to run as well as you are used to.....
Super ensures the cylinder pressure is higher which means you get more torquue from less air and fuel.....higher ron fuel is harder to ignite and burns slower......

Are octane boosters as effective as some manufacturers make out? I know they claim 1...2...3 RON additional but is there any concrete evidence to suggest particular brands work?

Justin

I wouldn't bother.......sure i expect they have some values but i would expect they cost even more than super..lol

Will be fine in normal set up, you will get less MPG than with Super but it will run with no real noticable difference. If the car has been remapped that might be a different matter, most remaps work on the assumption that you will use super and when you dont they can be a bit lumpy. The Autologic remap on mine hates normal fuel, had to get some once cos i was running out and no super available, it was very lumpy and took 2 tanks of V power to clear through.

Octane boosters do work as proved by Field motorsport on their engine dyno using the same engine under the exact same operatimg conditions. The miller oils octane booster faired very well if thats any use to you. The test also used the same fuel and for testing different ron rated fuels preformance also. So its best to use a high octane rated fuel and an octane booster for the best results.

I never suggested they were useless, what i implied is that with a temporary absence of Super they would prove a costly addition to premium unleaded...Could you post a link to the test results as i expect they will make interesting reading Alan....

Heard mixed results about the boosters so interesting to hear opinions. I read that they are useful to work with super but not so with normal. As I won't be able to get super at all I wondered if the booster may bring the RON somewhere near super but it seems unlikley. Maybe best to stick to normal and leave it alone. I had hoped to look towards a re-map in the future but again it seems super is the way to go.

Appreciate your comments,
Justin :-)

Hi Jod, the article was in a magazine I read. It was either Performance ford or Fast Ford. I'll dig out the right one tomorrow at work and try to copy it and post it somehow. Don't shoot me for reading Ford mags.:borg_ani:

Ah, Burton's, that brings back memory's. Anyone ever use Kent cams?, there was a big debate at the time(many moons ago) which cam was best Kent or Piper.

Think the whole super or not varies between vehicles. Used to run mine on regular before the re-map and noticed no difference whatsoever if I used super (except I was poorer !). Haven't tried regular since the re-map although had to use it on holiday when I couldn't find super and again didn't really notice a huge difference (but it was only a tank-full). You could of course have a re-map that is tailored towards regular unleaded.

christ yeah, i had a Piper BP285 race/rally cam in my trusty ford orion 1.6 :D the overrun was amazing LOL
the debate was cos kent were using regrinds instead of fully machined blanks iirc
