auto geabox oil

as some of you no my auto gearbox is slipping and i have been trying to figure out why.
it has only just came to me that a week or so before its started slipping i had a brand new radiator fitted to my car witch has an oil cooler in it for the auto box. when they changed my radiator would they have lost gearbox oil and if so they could have put rong oil back in witch is causing the slipping.
is that a big posibility?

been through this a hundred timeson another thread. yes oil level is fine. no burnt smell in oil. auto gearbox started slipping a week after i had new radiator with built in oil cooler for gearbox fitted.

I wouldn't have thought so, you don't loose very much at all when you change the radiator, more likely to be the wrong oil than not enough.

thats what i mean. what im saying is maybe the oil level went down abit when they changed the radiator so they topped it up a bit and put diferant oil in witch has done sumit to the oil in there to make it not work proply.

I'd be very surprised if you'd lost enough to make much of a difference, bearing that in mind the amount they might have added would make little or no difference, even if it was the wrong stuff.

i would not rule out the oil bein wrong,surely if clutch was slipping you would smell burnt oil on dipstick? see bits floating in oil? one of the many reasons i do all that i can mechanics wise on my own car therefore i know whats gone in it.that being said i dont know what wrong grade would do but they highly recomend in everything i've read DEXRON 3!!!!!!!!!!!!

I quite agree, I do everything I can manage on my own car, paint work included. I did mention changing the oil myself...

if it slips under hard accerleration I'm pretty sure it's the oil is the wrong type.

yep this weekend. just went to my local parts shop and got 15 litres of dexron 3. £16 for a 5 litre bottle so i got 3 bottles
how many litres does the autobox hold?
i no i have to do a few flushes. but after iv done the last flush how much do i put in?
my haynes manual says to do a few flushes using 2 litres in each flush but dont say how much to put in to fill it after flushing.

If i were you go get some DEX II as it will be cheap, and flush 10-15 litres of that through first, it will take a while to do the job, but do it properly ;)

But is'nt dexron 3 recomended? is it wise to mix 2 and 3??

na think im gona stick with the dex 3 to be safe.
dont think its needs loads of flushes anyways as its a clear redy colour anyways

Spoke to a mate of mine today re your problem,a he's a meaga volvo fan albeit a 700 series and an extremley proficient mechanic and has been for manyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy years (old git) he said a couple of things but nothing conclusive i'm afraid,he said if the oil is to thick ie:- the wrong viscosity it will cause slip. also the system operates on oil pressure via a series of pistons if one of these is letting oil by it will cause lack of pressure (slipping).
the only way the latter can be confirmed is by an auto specialist with the correct gauges attached so pressure readings can be taken and compared to the specs that they will have for this box. ;-/

yeah but how much will an auto gearbox specialist charge for doing the test. at the mo im gona change oil at weekend and see if its that. if its still slipping after the oil change then i am going to take somebody up on an offer if they still interested. simple as that. not realy stressed anymore abut it. gone past the hole flipping out part of it now. if its bust then i will loose money but hopefully gain i trustworthy car and th money to insure it. if its fixed then result i will sell the beast and buy a 7 seater of some kind or maybe do a swap deal of some kind.
if i can find somebody that has a 7 seater t5 manual that would want a t5r auto then maybe do a deal. thats if mines fine after oil change.
had enuf of auto now. just want a simple manual.
