I'm thinking of looking at a V70R that's had a recon'd engine fitted. Is this good or bad ?

Incidentally, where on the block is the engine number stamped ?

It's not good or bad, just make sure that they have proof of the recon and find out why it was recon'd in the first place.

A reconned engine can be a big plus and save you some money in the longrun IF it has been done properly. I have had a couple of cars done by companies aswell as doing a car myself and like I said they can be good in the long run. Check the history properly and make sure reciepts for the recon are there so you could contact the company who did the work, they are usually helpful if asked nicely.

I went to look at it today but decided to walk away. It was this (http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VOLVO+V70/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-203-240-4294966472-4294966791/search.action) one on Autotrader.

At first glance there didn't seem too much wrong with it but after driving it there was a loud clunk when going over bumps & changing between 'D' & 'R' in the auto box. It looked like it was the top engine to firewall mount that was 'knackered'. There was also some oil on the bottom of the sump & I did notice a puff of grey smoke after 'flooring' it.

The bodywork needed attention as there were creases in the o/s/r door & n/s/f wing, the wheels needed refurb'ing, air-con wasn't working, one of the headlamps was cracked, load cover was missing, o/s/r window switch not working.

Nothing that couldn't be fixed & probably reflected in the price to be fair. There was probably some other stuff that I missed, but in the end I decided I didn't want to take on all that work.

I hope you didn't waste too much money + time i hate it when you go and see something and you discover it is just a piece of (junk)whatever . Remember it was A1 condition.

read the description carefully

If you remember john's t5r he acuratley described his engine replacement as a replacement engine.

New engines for old car's seem odd so if it's described as a recon, why was it needed, who did it, why did they, where did they source it from, has it all the correct replacement parts an example would be a t5 and a t5r same engine different ecu but if it's described wrongly then it's misleading.

Was it fitted professionally if so when and was it guaranteed.

And lastly the biggest miss understanding if say it had the engine replaced at 120k it don't make it new, the gearbox, electrics, suspension and car are still all...120k old.

see it as a bonus as long as it's right but don't pay more for it
