What bhp is the above meant to be...

I'm only asking as mine seems, well, not very quick.. the car was regd dec 1998... the engine number has an S at the end of it which i was led to believe should be the the 170 bhp version, but it definitely aint doing that..

any ideas?

I know there was a 144 bhp version.. what was done to change it to 170?

5254FS ?? 20v
is it fly by wire if so 165bhp
if not 170bhp
the 144bhp is a 10v
i think the difference between the two is the extra horse is useable further up the rev range, normal driving is pretty much the same.

unless i'm wrong of course.

Even the 170 bhp model is a wet fart, if you want a v70 that performs get a turbo model,....end of story im afraid

theres only the one 2.5 20v engine fitted in the P1 V70, the B5254S

There are two slightly different ignition systems though, one is the jetronic and the other is the Motronic, with no major differences,

Chow is correct about the other one being 10v, with 144bhp

i think your confusing the B5244S2 engine (the 2.4 20v used in the later P2 cars). This had the variant of B5244S - the latter being the 170bhp version, the one with the 2 on the end being the 140bhp version.

He's right, all 2.5 20v engines are 170hp,some of the later vvt "S2" engines were fitted to 1999/2000my V70 series one cars but they were no more powerful anyway. It should be reasonably sprightly but it wont have real urgency to it,as chow said, you need a T5 for that.
