not much chance of that, I hear the new focus RS will only have 276 despite an lsd.

Ironic really that volvo having the flat cap and slippers image is the one making the most powerful cars out of the group.

customer service doesn't need to be fantastic, just equal

i would just like more of a comparative list of prices across the country,,,
just shows to me we are being ripped off

i have had 2 quotes today from Volvo dealers, 25 miles away from each other
1 for £347, the other for £394
and i have seen others who have had the etm replaced with prices from £200 ringht through to £630

something is wrong somewhere, it makes me begrudge paying £347 at my local stealers, when i know joe bloggs paid £200 in leicester,,

is there summat wrong with that ??

Both of those dealers are taking the pish. Volvo have started doing etm for cost. Unit is £135, software is £2 iirc. Labour is 0.4 hrs (you can change it yourself but car will be in limp mode until the software download is done).

I know of 2 people that have had this done/agreed the above with Volvo in recent weeks.

i have emailed them regarding the above, and a statement from someon in leicester having the whole thing done for £200...

they haven't got back to me as yet, so i am pretty sure they wont be doing

here is the quote from rybrooks,

Labour £168.00

ETM £156.40

Gasket £0.29p

ETM software £0.58pt

£325.27
VAT 48.79

Total £374.06

there is something seriously wrong with volvo UK if they are charging £168 + vat for 0.4 hours labour, even the ETM price has £20 bumped on top,,
i am sooo fed up with vovlo customer service round here, its verging on ridiculous

need to do some research to find a better deal, they wont be getting a sniff of my cash round here

Don't blame Volvo UK the labour rate is set by the dealer, dealers are franchises and as a result are a seperate company completely, hence why they have a variance in cost throughout the UK, Honda have a thing called Honda Happiness which is a UK set pricing structure by Honda UK for the fitment of common items like brake pads, discs, exhausts etc. This means that the price for brake pads fitted at one dealer in the south should be the same as that of a dealer in the north. Having said that this is something that isn't enforced by Honda UK just advised hence not all dealers have signed up to it.. so if your having work done on a Honda and you try and get a quote from a few dealers then you may well find a variance like you have with Volvo dealers. FYI the closer you are to London the higher the labour rate as a general rule of thumb and parts prices are advisory prices set by the manufacturer, if the dealer wishes to charge less or more that is down to them but it just means they run the risk of loosing the business by charging more!

Not having a dig at you about this btw and I don't work at either brand's HQ or dealerships. I have worked for a Honda franchise in the past and as you can see I didn't buy one. ;) lol

Honda was used loosely as more of an example than anything else :D
to be honest i really struggle to think of another car i would like to own, without daydreaming that is..lol

Well Rybrooks certainly wont be getting my cash, i am having a trip down to HLM this week

Yellow sticker is the new type (not prone to failure) and white sticker is the old type (prone to failure). I still have the old (white sticker) type.

Screwloose, can you describe the symptoms you had prior to having the ETM changed ? I presume you had the free clean/software update done by Volvo to patch over the issue previously ? I'm just trying to get to the bottom of whether my rough/lumpy idle is down to the ETM or not...

Hi mate

previously had the clean and software done, which tamed the car down, and turned it into a bore to drive, and made it feel worse.

symptoms,

on cold start revs would dance up and down uncontrollably for 10 seconds from 750 - 2000 rpm

generally uneven idle 250-850 instead of steady

feeling of picking up and slowing down on its own , more noticeable on cruise
control

cutting out when turning slow corners occasionaly, and same when parking sometimes.

thats about it really :D

HTH bud :D

Sounds about what mine is doing - although not cutting out, I have "generally uneven idle 250-850 instead of steady" and "feeling of picking up and slowing down on its own" - the latter mainly in low gears crawling in traffic.

Cheers

have you had the free stuff done,,thats what finally killed mine

cutting out would be like on full lock for parking or a tight corner at really slow speed,
engine not compensating for power steering

Yes I had the free stuff done about 6 months ago - I also noticed that the throttle response got dampened down somewhat, although got used to it after a short while.

The only real difference between now and then was that it used to go into limp mode (max ~20mph) before, and now it doesn't, but otherwise it's the same symptoms.

Seeing as the free update cured the problems for a while before and now I have the same symptoms, I'm pretty sure the ETM needs changing for a new one.

Don't know what the final bill will be - £153 for the ETM I'm told, plus labour and diagnosis, at £79 per hour I think they said, not sure how long it is to fit, can't be that long.

However, I've already got clearance from the warranty company that they'll pay, so yippee!

It never went to Sturgess to get the ETM done - I had to cancel due to work commitments. It's in at DPA in Nottingham this Friday though for full diagnosis of the problem (and a few other bits and pieces that I want done...)

cornclose
Friday 13th March 2009, 17:02
The rough idle I was having appears to have gone now the ETM has been cleaned. DPA said there was no need to get it changed, as it was a bit caked up that's all. So the Volvo main dealer in Melton didn't do the job properly last time I suspect, as they said it looked like it had never been removed from the car before - and I can agree with them as there were no finger marks or anything on it at all (there are now!). They said all they probably did was spray carb cleaner down the air intake (doh).

A vast improvement I have to say. Suprising what a bit of crap in a throttle boddy can do... They did say however that if I did have further problems they'd recommend changing the ETM. So I'll be keeping a close beedy eye on it...:B_steerin
