View Full Version : Trouble code - P1113 on V70 1999 ME7

Hello all,

I'm still getting a diagnostic trouble code on my car (a 1999 ME7 V70) - P1113.

I believe that P1113 = Outside temperature sensor, faulty signal.

Does anyone know where this sensor is? Is it the one clipped to the passenger-side lower bumper (which I know feeds the dash, and works fine according to the dash readout) - or elsewhere??

It's driving me mad!!! :blowingup

It may be the same location as the 850 which is at the nearside end of the large middle hole of the front splitter. Easiest way to test it is with a hair dryer and a thermometer.

daves right, its in the same place, if you have high resistance across the terminals due to oxidisation this will flag up that code try cleaning the contacts with electrical cleaner and working the connector a few times

Al mate there are 2 of these on the S/V 70s both attatched to the front bumper.

im pretty sure there is only one ambient temp sensor the only other temp sensor is the inlet air temp sensor in the maf

The Ambient temp sensor is to the left of the power steering pump,Near to the washer filler cap,

the outside temp sensors are under the front bumper.one either side of the A/C I/C (middle opening of the bumper)

i think your getting a bit confused mate, the ambient temp sensor is not near the washer bottle cap ,that the barometric pressure sensor ,the ambient sensor of which there is one (why two??) is as dave stated on thr front valence, ps ambient temp means outside temp!

Yes you are right that is the Barometric sensor,Bloody sensors everywhere on these cars,But i can assure you on both of my S70s i have had 2 temp sensors fitted,
God knows why,I had a fault code on mine went to replace it and fault code still showed,Looked on the other side there it was another one :eek:With a broken wire.

Man, now I'm confused!!! Ambient, inlet, outside... that's ME7s for you!

Thanks to all for the input.

I have caved in and booked the car at Pillings Volvo tomorrow for their opinion. £90 an hour, they damn better get me an answer! I'll post back.

90 pound a hour how the hell can they justify that!!!!

Al115

Erm - I don't think they do justify it? They just charge it

Have to cancel my trip to them today for "work" reasons anyway. Will have to pick up next week...

i suppose if they can get people to pay it they will charge it buggered if id pay someone 90 pound a hour to change a sensor

Hmm, but it's not just "changing a sensor", is it?

It's a diagnostic issue; the one outside temp sensor I have on the bumper valance is working fine, I can't find any other outside temp sensors, Independents won't have a clue, so I have to go "main dealer".

:cuckoo: :cuckoo: what do mean independents wont have clue, dont talk such crap, its not exactly rocket science is it? many indepedents are far better than main dealers in the diagnostic area ,whats special about main dealers apart from the fact they will nail your hat on? the first thing to do is remove the sensor and check for oxidisation across the terminals just because your temp indication in the car is about right doesnt mean that high resistance for eg across the contacts is flagging up a fault these sensors work on low voltage and current and are easily spooked then again you can still take it to your local stealer who will without doubt read the fault code and change the sensor and charge you dearly for the honour if i were you and wasnt capable of simple trouble shooting id look round for a decent indepedent otherwise these cars will bankrupt you pretty quick, (better still get a copy of vadis, a multimeter and start learning)

AlastairAL give this guy a ring he's based in hampton NICK FRANCIS 07775 927027 he has 34yrs with tamplins or you could dig deep into your pockets and go to a main STEALER the choice is yours!

Interesting. I have a copy of VADIS, I have a multimeter, I have a degree in Astrophysics (no really), and I have already been to an independent to try to solve this problem! :wallbash:

I have also had the one sensor I can find off the car, and checked it with a hairdryer and my multimeter. It seems fine, as far as I can tell.

The point about main stealers is, they have no excuse for not knowing the cars inside-out, so they have no excuse for not being able to fix the problem - in an ideal world, eh. I'm running out of ideas!

if i were you and wasnt capable of simple trouble shooting
Thanks for that :D

On a more positive note - Rich, thanks for the contact, much appreciated. I will give him a call.

Al,

Is this 'fault' causing any running issues ? Or is it just flagging a fault code ?
I do find your opinion of main dealers versus independants a tad offensive ! As the the main dealers have a habit of calling Adam & myself when they come unstuck ! And even we don't charge 90 quid an hour !

Regards,
Hamish.

main dealers may not have an excuse for not knowing your car however that doesnt mean they do know it! if you knew the standard of the average main dealer mechanic you wouldnt be so keen to pay them 90 quid a hr, give me a decent independent every time ps have you double checked that code ive a feeling it may be inlet air temp open circuit which is a totally different sensor from your ambient sensor and is in the maf sensing charge air temp which may be why your struggling (who read the code as its a standard 0bd2 code and not a volvo specfic one)

just for the sake of peace making , when he says ' independants ' he may be refering to ' the bloke with a garage on the corner ' who may charge say 25 quid an hour but wouldnt know a volvo fault code from a lottery number.

He might not be refering to a Volvo specialist who just doesnt happen to be a volvo franchise ??

Hope that makes you ' specialist boys ' feel better

If not do him boys !!!! :uglyhamme JOKE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Evening chaps,

OK, in order:

Hamish: we don't know for certain that this fault is causing running issues. However the two codes (P1111 and P1113) are the only two logged, and the car is not running properly. It stays low on boost until v. high revs, and then "lumps" up to 230 or so bhp (it was previously running 254 or so, unchipped). So I need to check these codes out as a first step, even if they are not causing the dodgy running.

Didn't mean to cause offence with my use of "independents" - the only independents I have access to locally are of the "volvo specialist" type, employing ex-Volvo staff, and with VADIS etc, but without access to Volvo's internal technical resources. Specialist outfits such as yours I can understand being more knowledgable than the average independent.

Andi: you're dead right that main stealers aren't "all that", I've had some shocking service in the past. All I meant was, the buck stops with them - essentially, they (or their affiliate company) built the sodding car! So no excuses for not knowing it backwards.

Inlet air temp, I did go down this path briefly before despairing of ever solving the problem on my tod. My car has a temp sensor in the pipe from the intercooler to the throttle body, next to a boost sensor, and I've had that out, inspected and cleaned it. Does the MAF also have a temp sensor? I replaced the MAF a year ago, and recently swapped it for a known-good (ie, brand-new-return-it-to-the-dealer-and-say-that-we-didn't-unwrap-it) one with no positive results.

And Mas: see above!

Hope that clarifies - thanks to all for trying to help with this.

Forgot to answer - I read the codes with my laptop over OBD2, as far as I can tell, both translate to "ECM-1100 Outer temperature sensor" - detail below...

ECM-1100 info;

Condition

If the control module receives a signal from the outside temperature sensor corresponding to a temperature lower than -39°C (low signal) or higher than
+129°C (high signal) the control module interprets it as a fault and
ECM-1100 is stored.

Substitute value
The values from the engine intake air temperature (IAT) sensor.

Possible source

Signal too high:
-short-circuit to ground in the signal cable -faulty outside temperature sensor Signal too low:
-open-circuit in the signal cable
-short-circuit to supply voltage in the signal cable -faulty outside temperature sensor -contact resistance in terminals
