After a bit of a ragging the power steering sometimes groans a little louder than normal, any ideas?

I'm guessing the power steering pump is not so happy.

Yup it's on it's way out.

Mines exactly the same - I'm waiting for my replacement to arrive 20quid off ebay YAY :)

Salvo want about 60 quid for one which is still very good given a new one is 400quid fitted.

Be careful mate - you may be right, but.....

I had noisy power-steering and automatically thought the worse i.e. power-steering pump on my 1st T5 - turns out it was low on PS Fluid and that's all it was!

Exactly the same on my 2nd ex plod T5 - they're prone to minor leaks so although annoying and regular, all you have to do to shut it up is top up the PS fluid.

Around £5 for a small bottle? May even be cheaper - certainly cheaper than replacing a pump - try it, I may be right and even if I'm not it only cost you a fiver and when you replace the pump you will need the PS fluid anyway (they'll do a fluid change whilst there as it has to be drained anyway, if they're any good).

just my 2 penneth.... :)

This is true and I should of mentioned that first. DOH!

I've checked my levels and their fine and my local dealer mentioned the pump is on it's way out at my service. Decided to source a 2nd hand one and try it myself rather than paying the dealer 400quid.

Cheers,
Andrew.

I check the fluid regularily :-( not that

It is fine after the car is switched off and left then driven again..

Anyone know where it is or how much a new one is. easy to replace?

Fair play mate if that's what it is, just didn't want you to waste any money :)

Before you make up your mind that it is the power steering pump first jack up the front of the car, start the engine and turn the steering wheel, first sharply to the left and then to the right, if the pump is noisy in both directions then you are probable correct, if only in one direction then it will more than lightly be a sticking valve in the steering rack - ow- GSF £147+vat for recon exchange, I have the same problem and have just paid a volvo specialist for the check before doing the job myself.
