(BEETLE)hi all thought id blow a few minds and make something a bit differant from ur average volvo cars ive fitted a complete volvo t5 and manual 5 speed gearbox into a 1970 rwd beetle
this this nothing like a smooth volvo to drive and u need life insurance to drive it lol,
specs are
t5 turbo lump
m56 gearbox(upratted)
rica 304 ecu
std turbo(quicker spool up)15g
baily dump valve
upratted intercooler(full size of bug boot)
induction air filter
oil cooler
upratted clutch
mbc fitted
decatted
no powersteering or aircon
this in a bug it totaly stupid and dangrous compaired to the chipped t5 volvos
4inch of the floor
tuck me 4months up to what state its in at mo
parts include
volvo/bug/vauxhall parts and its going road legal
and easy burns tyres in 1-4 of the gears
i think im the only bug with this setup in the u.k and other foriums ive checked out
ive raced police cars .porshces and 1 ferri (on the track only )
this monster will do 165mph (but i got a twicty arse at 130mph and was like the engine was doing about 4000rpm ive a few pics/videos if anyone maybe instrested the noise is unreal thought id let u all know

Hi mate, seen a few of your posts on voc, post some pics up as it sounds awesome!!!

Couple of questions, what made you choose the T5 lump for the conversion? And what have you done to uprate the M56 box?

Hi mate, seen a few of your posts on voc, post some pics up as it sounds awesome!!!

Couple of questions, what made you choose the T5 lump for the conversion? And what have you done to uprate the M56 box?basicly i had a old bug rotting away and thought of many lumps but this t5 was cheep so i went for a quick spin and was amazed how well it went std and pulled well 4 a big car and nice moterway crusers too ,so thought rwd t5 in a bug has to be fun. only thing it knocks the hell out of my body when trying to keep the front down ,its like a g force off a theme park ride

400 bhp per tonne.

Say you have 225 bhp in 500 kg car. That's the equivalent to 450 bhp in a 1000 kg car, ie 450 bhp per tonne.

If you have 300 bhp in a 500 kg car, that's equivalent to 600 bhp in a 1000 kg car, ie 600 bhp per tonne.

On a good turbo and engine, the RICA 304 will produce approx 300 bhp. No joke.

well, fastest so far in a road legal T5 is 13.5 secs in a 1500 kg car running about 340 bhp with 19T. With half the weight or even less, I reckon you'll easily get into the low 12s and possibly into the 11s.

Give you an idea, the Jedi single seater with 160 bhp and approx 300 kg did it in 12.0 and still had traction problems even at the end of the 1/4 mile. 11s are achievable with that. So with good traction and similar power to weight ratio, you should be able to get decent times.

I personally think that you and this creation will single handedly cause the most puzzled faces in the world EVER!!

Mum, Dad and kids off out for a drive in their Zafira 'GTi'.

Dad looks in his rear view mirror and say something like "Hey kids Look at this beetle coming from behind, I used to have one of those when I was a kid"

Then as you disappear in the distance as a tiny spec on the horizon,

Dad will think = I need my eyes testing cos I thought that was a beetle!
Mum will think = Dad was a bit irresponsible as a youth!
Kids will think = WTF did Dad buy a Zafira!!!

And that will be the response from everything you overtake...............!

hi all as most know i fitted a t5 volvo in my bug ,but went for a flat out test run ,its ok not as quick as i thought , but it was dark coming home the a light came me thinking it was the alti light(it wasnt it was the oil light oh dear)
me not knowing carryed on driveing the vechical with the light for 8mins then i noticed the engine started tapping loud , i knew it then was the oil light i madged to get back , and removed the covers to find it had blow the oil pipe in 2 (which goes to radiator cooler) i thought id lost the engine ,

so had to find out i repaired the pipe and put a full gallon of oil in the engine ,and cranked the engine (hopeing the oil light would go out)lucky it did ,then started the engine and everything seems ok , no smoke or cranky/tapping noises?

left it then for a hour or so then started it up the oil light went straight out so im assumeing its ok seems to drive and boost ok (thank god ):Banane45

The 15G will never spool up like a diesel turbo!!! The diesel turbos are designed to spool up from under 1500 rpm.

Full boost is still a bit low at full load, so there is still a fair bit of performance to be gained from sorting it.

You will struggle to get a modern diesel turbo to work on your car. They use VNT which dynamically changes the physical geometry of the turbo to aid spooling at low revs without losing power at high revs. Without the VNT controller it won't work properly.

Food for thought! Nothing is impossible. In fact, the Dynojet Wideband Commander with a few other bits and bobs would be able to do this for you based on RPM and boost pressure, except that it's about £400 so it ain't cheap.

We supply the Wideband Commanders. I will PM you a price tomorrow and some suggestions on how to use it. You will need to use a VNT turbo big enough to flow the same power at 5000+ rpm. I must do some digging...
