Might make the job easier if the big nut is seized... any opinions?

Do it properly the first time round with genuine Volvo boots.

used them on mine, passed MOT with them, only thing I will say is throw away the free grease and get some proper stuff.

i agree mate, if the boot splits, and is not noticed, the cv joint will soon need replacing, and as far as i know, you cant buy the joint seperatly on some cars, meaning a new drive shaft.

I would avoid them . Have used them before at work on a BMW when the CV-joint refused to budge from the hub and it was successful if a little fiddly but don't think they'ed be up to much when used on a front wheel drive motor when the joint moves in two planes. Incidently, if the hub-nut is seized or you can't get the joint out of the hub you can simply slid the c/v joint off the driveshaft leaving the joint in the hub and replace the boot that way. I do it like that most of the time on Volvo's, it's quicker then muckin' around with the hub-nut !

personnal choice i guess at the end of the day, if done correctly they stay intact, check my car over on a regular basis and they show no signs of wear.

Short term win... great for a quick job and to keep the dirt out, but long term, get a proper boot and fix it right...
