When starting the car from cold, like a couple of days cold, the revs at startup rise up to 1700-2000 before dropping slowly back to idle, with the occasional (every 30 secs or so - but still ice cold????) rise associated with the A/C pump (idle is very stable with no A/C on) . Now is this normal or does something need a clean somewhere?

Normally you do get a rise of revs when the engine is started. I've seen this vary from 1500-2500 depending on the car. Cars with a PCV system and vacuum pipes in good condition have all seemed to rev lower on start up.

As for the idle changing with the AC switched on, that's also normal as the engine responds to the load the AC compressor applies to it when the clutch kicks in and out.
