Hi all

I am hoping for some advice here - I have fitted my gearbox but as mentioned before it has locked the engine.

I got it on a ramp took the subframe down, took the box off - engine turns. Put the box back up the engine locks! Any suggestions as to why this is happening? I was told that maybe as the engine is from a manual car the crank may be longer causing the talk converter to lock, but I am around 99% sure that that is not the problem.

Please help if you can!!

Hi Bt ,christ mate sounds like you've had a rough weekend ! When you dropped the box did you try fitting the torque convertor to the gearbox to check it slots on smoothly ? Usually the torque convertor neck has flats on it which must engage with the oil pump inside the gearbox and it's often here that the problems can arise. Can you fit the torque convertor to the gearbox on an 850 and then fit the box to the engine as with usual auto's ? (I ask because I know the swedes do strange things sometimes !) and was the torque convertor that you are using the same one that went with the box you have ?

it's a bit of a long shot, but in the end of the crank of manual cars there is a 'nose bearing', are you sure this was removed when the engine swop was done?

Hi lads

Yep it has been a nightmare - The nose bearing was changed as the bearing for the auto box has a wider centre than the one for the manual, without changing it the box wont fit.

And yes you have to fit the talk converter to the box before fitting to the flywheel and bolting up the box. I have left the car with my cousin who has asked someone from Direct transmissions to come have a look hopefully they find the problem.

Thanks for the help. Bigtony

Big T sounds daft mate and i know you know what you are doing but was there enough oil in the box??? and does the box rotate when not connected to the engine???or is it stuck in park/drive or something

It is hard to keep all the oil in as you end up wearing some :) but yes the box had enough oil...the funny thing is the engine turns without the box, and the box turns when not on the engine -mate them up and not tighten the box or converter and they both turn as soon as you tighten up the box bolts they both lock up. I have spoken to a volvo garage, and between gritted teeth they could not tell me the prob. I even checked if there was to be a backing plate/spacer betwee the box and engine the answer was no.

I think i will wait until this autobox specialist gets there and gives me a diag - dont worry it will take a herd of stampedeing wild buffalo to stop me from driving that car!!!
