under the bonnet down the left hand side were the fan belt/drive belt goes, the belt will go round your alternator/crank/air con compressor and a idler and a tensioner, its a big ugly looking thing with two metal pipes coming from it

Compressor is under the bonnet (it's driven by the belt on the left hand side of the engine)

Evaporator is behind the dashboard - when my garage looked at mine they told me that Volvo had "started with the evaporator, then built the rest of the car around it" - expensive to fix as you have to pay somebody to undertake the 4 hour (ie 8 hours garage time) job of taking the dash to bits...

your best to phone a dealer and give them your reg so they can obtain the vin number as there are 2 different compressors plus it wont be cheap.I would do the deal with who ever but ask for about £700 off for getting the compressor done or ask them to get it done b4 you buy it

Evaporator was going to cost me about £800 inc part!.
Picked my car up today. Air-con specialist said evaporator was leaking but too involved for him to tackle. Took car to body specialist as it involved mainly body type work to get at it. They checked the system, said they could find no leaks apart from the inlet valve. Cost including checking, regas, and valve (£4) was under £60. I'm hoping the firm is right. Certainly sounded knowledgable!

Cheers guys,
he said he aint going to get it done OR knock off any on the price..
But said it was deffo the compresser and not the evaporater.

Thing is im not worried about fitting the compresser, but i aint taking the dash out!!

Does anyone know if the compresser is the same throughout the range??
Ie one fits all or are the T5 ones only for the T5?

Mate it is really hard to tell if that is exhibit a pump and then there is a exhibit b pump there are two different types depending on your vin number and what is fitted to it you need the make of pump a and see if the car(pump b) is the same make if not then it wont fit

it seems to me they are all interchangeable. there are lots (and lots) of different part number options, but they all appear to be replaced by the same part number of an exchange unit. i would be able to check it a bit better if i was in work, but i am not there until monday now, but looking at it, it does appear that they will be interchangebale between 850 and V70 P1, though i would have prefered to double check with the supersessions and then give a definite answer.

IMHO, if he won't budge on the price I wouldn't buy it; there's plenty of others out there. As a matter of interest, according to the latest 'Volvo Technical Driver' from VOC, one of the main reasons for compressor failure on older cars is that the receiver/drier has never been changed. Apparently, this should be done every 3 years or so, but Volvo haven't included it in their maintenance schedule. The compressor is meant to be compressing dry gas & if any moisture gets to it, it soon ruins it. I'm having mine done next week.
Cheers, Chris.

Check if the problem is the compressor or the compressor clutch (built into the pulley on the end) If it's just the clutch you may be able to replace that seperately (have done so on several Fords etc) or it may need reshimming to reduce the gap between the plate and the clutch. Mine was like this, I was getting power to the clutch when the air-con was on but the clutch didn't throw in so the pump didn't turn ! The clutch worked fine however when given a direct feed from the battery (higher current) so a simple 2 quid relay wired in to the clutches feed and the battery + saved a fortune !

My independant mechanic told me exactly that - and I have changed the dryer twice now. Its quite cheap - but does require a regass afterwards.
