View Full Version : S40 Running roughly?!?

Hello,

I am a new member, having just bought a 1998S S40 2.0CD. It is great apart from a few niggles. I wonder if you could all bring your combined wisdom to bear on my problems!

The first is a loud clicking noise coming from behind the dash on startup. It goes on for about 10 seconds, then stops. I've looked at all the relays and they seem alright. Very odd...

The second is that the lambda light comes on most of the time, once the engine is up to temperature. It doesn't always come on either if it's a coolish day. I have noticed under the bonnet that one of the thin plastic pipes going into the air box has cracked, and has been patched with masking tape, but is still a bit gappy.

In addition, the car runs a bit roughly and jerkily at times, I wondered if this was all interlinked. I think there is also a leak in the exhaust manifold somewhere because this gets a bit throaty under high load/harsh accleration.

Apart from that the car's great. Any advice would be lovely, apart from telling me I've bought a dog....

Cheers!! :troutslap

Hmmm,

I think your first port of call is to get the codes read if its throwing a lambda light. There are soooooo many possibilities of what it could be, anything from the MAF/MAP to a boost leak.

You say that the exhaust sounds throaty mate, my guess would be that the hole or leak will be coming from where the Lambda sensor is situated. Take it to a garage and get them to have a look at it.

Loud ticking isn't the 'seat belt' warning is it ?

Well, I had thought this actually. Having not owned a Volvo before it might be, since it doesn't seem to be anything else. I think I need to take the car into a specialist to find out about the Lambda light and excessive noise from manifold. Think to be honest eveything else is pretty much linked.

Ta muchly for everyone's advice, I'll post some pics of the beast soon...
