Black circles are OK but I've found that they can be undercut easily.
I got obsessed with finding a good tyre deal a few weeks ago and I did the Black Circle search then rang their local recomended garages direct and the price was between £40 and £120 less for all four non-branded tyres...

I thought Goodyear F1 GSD2 @ £82 each was good going myself, it was cheaper than mytyres.co.uk by about a fiver a tyre.

I understand the fact that good tyres are essential on a Volvistic missile but I took the advice of the tyre man (who knows more than me which isn't hard).
He provided me with a recommended tyre and stated that branded tyres include BT (brand tax) - the tax for having a name on your tyre which few ever read. Quoting the man in the blue overall, "The tyre may cost twice as much but isn't anywhere near twice as good." Note that Kumhos (a tyre in question) are not branded but are the stock tyre on Porsche now.
I'll freely admit I know jack about this as I rely upon the advice of 'experts' including large numbers of the people on this site. :wave23d:

Give me Goodyear any time, i'll admit i'm a bit of a label freak, not as bad as 10 years ago like but give me Nike over Gola!

ok i'll admit it now, had 4 kumhos fitted 2 days before christmas. 205/45/17s for £300 at my local tyre fitters. no problems to report at all.

Fair enough. I bought an 850R over a T5 - that is a label and cost me more so I've no room for comment.
As long as the car stops in time, sticks to a corner and stays inflated I am happy.

I did the web search and the ringing round for two tyres and found Costco was my choice (you need a mate with a membership card though) they only do Michelin so not much choice their :slap: but they balance all wheels and did a great job cos you worry about the alloys when they clamp them in them machines :nono: the strange thing is if you only buy two tyres they will move them to be the back wheels, they won't put em on the front

So what brand would you guys recommend?
I have 16 inch alloys - avons on the rear 205/55/zr16
StarPerformer on the front - which I desperately want to get rid of!

Are 215's better than 205's??

I'm running Falkens (budget-ish) on mine, they have been quite grippy whilst wearing quickly.

It would be good to hear how Bracer is getting on with the Falkens, having fitted them to SAM a few months ago IIRC?

I've just had 2 Avon ZZ3's fitted on standard rims for £135 ish total, at Bathwick tyres in Newbury. Goods in stock, and they even got my old locking wheel nuts of the rear wheels no probs FOC, and spotted that the tracking was >5mm out toeing out over 3mm, when should be toeing in 2.4mm.

All fixed now - and am very happy.

Much better that £110 per boot Kwik Fit wanted for P6000's :wiggle:

Went to the local Selectatyre place and got two Vredestein Utracs on the rear. Can't remember their cost exactly but I also got a front puncture fixed and a 4 wheel laser alignment for the total of £190 so can't be bad.

I can't believe the difference the two new rears have had - much less understeer and the car is much more nimble. Well worth it.

If you live nearby I don't think you can beat Bracknell Tyre and Battery in.....er....Bracknell.

Just put 4 new Good Year Eagles F1 GSD3s on my M Coupe. £397 fitted etc. Coupe takes fat rubber too.

Bargain.

When I track down the ideal 'R' thats where I'll be taking it for front boots.

I recently bought 2 Pirelli P-Zero Asymetrico part worn (5mm of tread on both) front tyres for my S70R for £50! Size 205/40/R17. Beat that! :)

Pirelli P-Zeros were the tyres Volvo recommended and put on the 'R' range straight from the factory and I've NEVER got close to losing grip with them, tight precise handling - just what you need. :)

I personally think the brand / tyre you choose is almost entirely down to personal preference (and possibly cost).

Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced tyre (or 4) that is QUIET? With the lower profile and stiffer suspension tyre noise is more noticable on the T5 than my previous Volvos. 205/50 x16"

Try Johnsons Tyre Services using this link....

I just paid £150 per corner fitted for Goodyear GSD 235/35/19 which is reasonable, or they can do free delivery if you're further away. :B_steerin
