I have just had my steering rack reconditioned by a company called www.westernpowersteering.co.uk (http://www.westernpowersteering.co.uk), i had to take the rack out and box it up. They have a deal goin with a courier (very resonable) so ask for details.
For my volvo 850R rack it was around the ton mark + postage.
I sent it on a tuesday afternoon and got it back on friday morning. I now have it all back in and working great so I wanted to let evryone know about a good service.:Handshake

Whilst we are on the subject does anyone know if the internals of the steering rack are the same as the 740/760/960...? I have found a quick rack setup, but they do not list an 850......????

Entirely different - 700 series was RWD.

This is a 760 rack: >Click< (http://catimages2.sophio.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/imc/images/full/1330136.jpg)
Quite a few differences from the 850, as Dave says would it be strong enough for FWD is probably the main thing then how much work are you willing to put in, to start with it doesnt have the engine mount on it and the normal 850 mounting points, other than those points i wouldnt mind betting it could be made to fit.

The kit I've been looking at only includes :
the rack - as in the bar that sits inside the sealed main unit
and larger pinion Cog.

It would involve a complete strip down to install.
I can't see Volvo designing a steering unit when they could buy a standard rack and pinion with the end links and steering column unit designed to fit.
A bit like the rear diff in the new V70R which is fitted to many different models

it may be worth a trip to a salvage yard to have a closer look....

Wobbley - Why being RWD would it matter...?
