Can I please hear your suggestions on what books any competent mechanic should have. I'd like to have enough material to cover almost every aspect of vehicle maintainance, from custom body panels through to engine overhaul; obviously with this specification any book covering the topic (not just for Volvos) would be handy. Haynes is obviously very limited, and doesn't go into any explanation of why you have to do what you're doing. Eg a chapter on gearbox maintainance would ideally background talk about backlash widths and the maths involved with the tooth design etc. Or why intake and exhaust porting prefers different surface textures etc.

I know we have a few teachers on here, so I'd much appreciate a few pointers!

Muchos gracias!

You mention Haynes manuals not being any good. Recent Haynes manuals are crap (now they've been taken over! ) But older Haynes manuals used to tell you everything. Grap a few for pennies at car boot sales for an older model car and you'd be suprised at what you can learn and apply to more modern motors.
