View Full Version : Charity Relay?

Mrsmopp
Friday 5th May 2006, 10:48
Looking at the google map we seem to have the whole of the country covered, so how aboout a north to south relay in aid of charity?

It'll take some organising so just testing the water and see if we can get a feel for whether we could make it work?

I had Markt4 in mind http://www.vpcuk.org/forums/showthread.php?t=7227

Possibly September?

So whats your thinkin about this then Moppy?

Do you have a start and finish point in mind?

Mrsmopp
Friday 5th May 2006, 20:53
Ermmmm, well it was just a thought I had and I hadn't yet got to the logistics.....

It'll take a couple of months to organise so August would be the earliest I think, but I think September may be better as we already have the track day in August which will be quite expensive.

So September? From Portsmouth clockwise and then straight down the middle of the country to London?

Will gladly take suggestions (*read HELP*) on this tho?

x

Andy
Friday 5th May 2006, 20:56

Mrsmopp

You going to travel down to south wales then Wayne? :)

No you've got to come up.....he he ...you know how windy the roads would be. You might as well go via Birmingham, its quicker..

In actual fact a drive down through the mountains would be quite enjoyable, .
.

.
.
so I changed my mind...yep I'll do North to south Wales....

JUDGENINJA

I may have something in mind.... It just depends on when a proposed date would be.... If got all the pieces, but still need to assemble it...it would be completely unique to this place...

I'll watch the plans develop and if it fits the purpose I get it ready...

And no i'm not telling the world just yet...

As well as the batten - how about a photo album and a polaroid. Each member who helps can take a pic put a comment on the bottom and pop it in the album to sort of prove all of the hand overs etc.

Might be nice.

How about each vehicle that takes part wraps a present which is passed on at each check point to then be given to the needy at the end of the run.

1) Whoever the present were given to i.e. Needy Children etc would be happy as larry

2) We'd feel as if we were giving something which actually touches someone along with the money which could/would be raised.

3) If the press got wind of this then it would be a massive PR exercise for this site.

Yeah I like the idea of that - that way it doesn't matter if each leg is short cos the pressies would add up :)

Just a thought, I wonder if Volvo would be interested? Not asking them to donate although we wouldn't refuse but, if they were interested, we could link their dealers up as checkpoints. That could offer 1, A possible donation from the dealers. 2, Clout to offer the local rags and trade publications. 3, A definate easily found checkpoint for each leg ie Lancaster Volvo Ipswich to Cecil & Larter Bury St Edmunds to Marshalls Cambridge.

Just a thought, one of many to ponder I expect.

Justin suggested this very same idea when the idea of a charity relay first came up, we didn't want to mention it on here tho unless for some reason it didn't happen. J will be speaking with Volvo on Monday and we'll se what they think :)

If we've still got the Volvo we could do the Durham to the next one, think that would be the Teeside one, I think the dealers involvement is a good idea, the piccy of handing over each time could be taken outside the dealership. Hows the fundraising going to be done ? Sponsorship ? Or maybe with that thought in mind leave a collecting bucket with the dealership who can advertise the event and see if they can get support there on the day and they could hand over the collections on the day when the baton is passed along ? Advertise on the TV/papers etc that if any businesses wish to make a donation they might be able to collect it along the way. We did that with a bed push years ago. Another one maybe to include on way is the likes of VT and other forum supporting businesses.

Volvo would be mad to not want to be part of it, could make it very big indeed with radio publicity and papers, maybe even local tele, sounds like everyone needs to go on a blagging mission. Wonder if could get a police T5 escort lol

All just ideas of course

Thanks for those kind words TC i dont really talk about it much even though my other half is going through the same as she has known him since we got together but i cant normally express my feelings to anyone i just bottle it up and deal with it in my own way this kinda helps

If it was Tal-y-Bont (Bangor) it is only 20 miles from my house. Nice little Village.

Suggested Charities
Could I make a suggestion to people who think they have a charity that could benefit from this sort of collection - PM Moppy (if she is happy to co-ordinate (PS - Moppy I'm willing to help out if needed)) giving a brief background to the charity (what it does / where / when ) and how this sort of charity event would help their cause.

That way this thread can keep to getting active members involved and discuss the planning of this mamouth task. Then at a later date, maybe Moppy can post the suggested charities and we can either vote to support all or just some of the ones that would like help...

Rainbow Children would definately get my vote as it is personal to a member here...

A couple of thoughts.

How is the sponsorship happening?

The first thought that came to mind when someone mentioned a relay race was to have a large sweet tub, the kind on the shelf at the back of sweet shops.

Everyone who takes part, receives the jar and pops a £10 note inside and then meets up with the next person who does the same.

That person then takes a photo of the person receiving the jar and sends the photo in later. This will deter you from stealing the jar and contents as we will make wanted posters and hunt you down!!! but also on a happier note, we have a record of all who took part.

If this is going to involve dealers for more money and publicity, the dealers visited post a cheque or envelope with their donation with a business card attached and this is added to a list of thanks published on a website and maybe those free mags you read at the dealership well you prepare for the cost of your repair.

Off the top of my head, how about VOLBALLRUN.CO.UK

Oh and by the way, i'm in.

Next idea, as lots of members here drive Ex cop cars, one of volvo's largest consumers are police forces and most peoples inner child wants to fit lights and sirens to their car.

The final 100 yards or so should be done by a police volvo with lights and siren going as it passes the finishing line and hands over the jar for counting.
