Hi Guys,
Looking for some advise really so thought I would come to the fountain of knowledge lol
looking for my first T5 (on a budget!) and a friend has offered me his as hes just bought a new 4x4. Its a P reg 96 850 T5, not ex police so has all the goodies, manual box and has 89k on it.
What sort of problems or servicing do these need at this milage for starters? I really couldnt afford to get hit with some nasty gremlins if i do take the plunge, and whats a realistic price for it secondly? they all seem to be ex police that i've seen so far but would prefer a "Real" one with all the mod cons if i can find one......
anyway thanx for reading, and an even bigger thanx in advance to anyone that can help!!!!! :worship:

Hi and :welcome:
At 89k it should have just had a cambelt and serviced accordingly, its an expensive job at volvo and would need doing immediately if not done.
Look for major oil leaks around the gearbox as this would mean rear main oil seal has gone, also look for any managment lights on the dash, if it runs well it should be fine, you can expect to see the boost gauge go half to three quarters into the white if its on song.
89k is a great platform to work on btw, many have well over 100k on them and are starting to become tired.
Take the plunge mate, whats he asking for it?
Cheers

i've got him down to £3500 coz it looks like a cattle shed inside and out  !!!! its nowt serious.... no rot or dents just never had any tlc in that way for long long time
it starts and runs like you would expect an 89k volvo should, thrust bearings a bit noisey and the rear discs need replacing but thats about all i could fault it on. turbo seems to be spot on, done the "tick over for 5 mins then boot it" test, which it passed! but dont know if theres any other way to test it?

Start the car from cold, and rev it to about 3k, if it smokes the rings are worn, it must be stone cold tho.

:welcome:
Think you should be ok with this one. £3500 is still quite a lot even with the limited mileage (as Volvo owner's - we don't reckon the car has gone anywhere until at least 120K)
Auxiliary systems like A/c can be expensive to repair - that's if you're bothered.
Bit of a list (not exhaustive)

thanks a lot for the advise so far, hes just sent me a text this morning and the cam belt was done @ 75k by main volvo dealer + a service. It had new pads front and back about 4k ago but back disks are shot and should have been done at the same time. The only noise coming from it is from the thrust bearing on the clutch, couldnt see any signs of oil leaks but will have a closer look today. The zorst looks a bit tatty and hes admitted hes noticed its been blowing of late but cant trace where from. The alloys are in dam good nick.... very slight kerb grinding on the front 2 but hardly noticable. also had 2 new front tyres but needs 2 new rears. other than that it just needs a dam good wash!!! my mate is a machine polisher for an local jap import group and says he'll do a full valet inside and out for £40.... he done my 2.0 Primera SRi the other week and it looks fantastic so if he can do the same here it'll be well worth it.
I'm going to see my friendly bank manager this afternoon so will keep you all posted but it looks like you've got a new addition to the family lol

Sounds good mate.
The zorst is no major deal, as long as its not the cat thats blowing, cambelt done is good news, rear disks are cheap and easy too.
Hope all goes well, keep us posted.
Good to have you aboard :)

Hi again, how can i make sure the turbo plate is in place? not really sure what i should be looking for on that front :shifty:
Justin
Tuesday 12th October 2004, 10:49
What do you mean by turbo plate mate ??
Wobbly Dave
Tuesday 12th October 2004, 10:52
I should have modified that to read heat sheild - as an indicator of tinkering with the wastegate - which can be a good or bad thing depending on who dunnit!
Justin
Tuesday 12th October 2004, 11:01
If you have trouble seeing the turbo from above it then the shield is there, if you can its not!
If that makes sense :shifty:

Haha!!! I'm with ya now!
Its there and in place in that case! this cars never been modded.... one owner from new (the one that i'm buying it off) It only got washed on its birthday so the fact that he would have to lift spanners to do any modding would put this guy off lol
on the other hand I love tinkering (hence the primera sri) what sort of mods can be done on these? air filters / ecu's / zorsts / etc etc?

The T5 engine with the manual throttle is the most tuneable. Later models come with electronic throttles and VVT heads and a lot more sensors and are not as easy. You can tune it in many ways. Biggest single leap is with an ECU remap. As an automatic 850R mine came with 240bhp as standard and the RICA remap I had took her out to 304bhp. I have also added a panel air filter (ITG) - the stock air box is fine and you do not need to invest in a cone. Similarly the stock exhaust is not a restriction but can be changed for auditory and cosmetic reasons. I have also fitted a Volvo OEM Strut brace on the front turrets - it tightens up the front end alot and helps with the handling. I have put on descent pads (Ferodo DS Performance) and Brembo disks on the front.
Change the plugs - get NDK BKR7EVX - it's is the only one NGK make for the T5 engine...
Change your fuel filter and make sure she runs on optimax.
Volvotuning are doing a special offer at the moment on the RICA upgrade

Oh yeah if you wanna do a cheap and easy mod - you can fit a manual boost controller to push up the boost
